                       Naggers mighty feat in vain

On the face of it this was a match where one side batted too long and the other disgruntled about the declaration did themselves no favours when then had their turn to bat.  On the other hand Old Johnians from being down and out 70-6 and 118-7 clawed their way up to 173  before declaring, albeit in the 62nd over.

What is quite remarkable is the bowling stint of John Nagenda. He bowled unchanged fast medium for 31.4 overs with only lunch in between. Nagenda had remarkable stamina. He would frequently drink malt whisky and club till dawn, service a young lady or regular partner, play squash and then open the bowling.

The figures in this match give truth to the legend.

Nomads opened steadily but then lost a flurry of wickets while Maloney stood firm. Merricks came in and hit three boundaries including two sixes and then Whiteway batting far too low added 29 out of a stand of 42 before he was bowled by Hooper. Mostyn and Leahy went for ducks but Clarke and Maloney held on to draw.

After the match a Sibley or two were despatched to purchase a bottle or more of Glenmorange and a challenge laid down for the following year and a damn close match it was to be with Nomads recovering from 25-4, & 49-5 to 199-9 dec.(Ghersie 52,Nagenda 47,Lamb 30).
