Match 01 NOMADS CC v SPORTING ALFAS CC Mid Week XI at Columbus Oval Albir L'Alfas Del Pi Spain SUNDAY MARCH 16TH   2007, 40 overs,8 max per bowler

Barter century for Nomads

A depleted Alfas Midweek XI proved no match for the Nomads C.C. and consequently lost its third successive match.

Batting first, Alfas lost an early wicket before Grindey and Pennick took the score to eighty-nine when the former was run-out having scored a well made thirty-three. After Pennick departed having just completed his half-century, it was left to Matthews to hold the innings together with a solidly compiled fifty-seven, as the final total reached a reasonable 196-7. For the Nomads, Chaudrey was the moist economical bowler, only conceding eighteen runs from his eight overs, whilst Thewlis and Asif each claimed two wickets.

In the absence of a full complement of fielders, the task for Alfas was always going to be a difficult one. The Nomads score had reached thirty before Pennick claimed the wicket of Latchman and when Grindey picked up two wickets in his final three overs, the total stood at 54-3 and offered some encouragement to the home team. However Barter and M. Adams (38) then featured in a stand of one hundred and nineteen for the fourth wicket which took control of the game. Barter, hitting the ball powerfully, duly completed his century and was undefeated with 105 to his credit when victory was achieved by six wickets with eight overs to spare. The pick of the Alfas bowlers was Grindey, who claimed 2-23 from his eight overs.

Match 02 NOMADS CC v SPORTING ALFAS CC   at Columbus Oval Albir L'Alfas Del Pi Spain SUNDAY MARCH 16TH   2007, 40 overs,8 max per bowler

Nomads let themselves down

Nomads won the toss and invited  Sporting Alfas to bat. The theory was that a few hours in the field would sober up key Nomad batsmen. Not surprisingly Alfas was in control most  of the match. Alfas was given an excellent start by its opening pair, as Grindey and Ali produced an opening partnership of one hundred and fifty-eight by the twenty-third over. Grindey, having played well and reached sixty-six, was then a run-out victim for the second successive day. Ali, who has played for Nomads, played with his usual aggression and not without luck at times dispatched the ball to all corners of the ground as he completed his second century of the season. Blumberg bowled Climent and Lamb eventually trapped Shafiq.  Howe and Crompton to take the final score to an impressive 264-3. Howe was undefeated with thirty to his credit and Crompton twenty-three not out. At 20 overs Alfas were 142-0 so restricting them to 124-3 in the second 20 overs was an improvement.

The reply by the Nomads started well with forty-three runs coming from the first nine overs before Barter pulled a short ball from Munoz to square-leg, where Crompton took a good catch. When the opening bowlers were withdrawn from the fray, Alfas took a firm grip on the game as the Nomads  middle order batsmen found runs hard to come by against the leg-spin of Crompton and the off-spin of Pennick. In his eight over spell, Crompton conceded only twenty-two runs, whilst Pennick returned the remarkable figures of 5-20 from his eight overs. Unfortunately Latchman & Thewlis opted to bat low  and as the  Alfas Captain opened up the game with some occassional bowlers.  Thewlis in particular took full advantage of the situation and plundered an undefeated eighty-five before the innings closed on 216-9, leaving Alfas comfortable winners by forty-eight runs.Had Thewlis batted up the order the result may well have been different especially in view of the mauling he had given Crompton last November.

It is some time since Nomads defeated Alfas on Saturday something to do with the attraction of Benidorm and its effect on otherwise competent cricketers. A fit and sober Nomads XI would have made for a much closer match.

Match 03 NOMADS CC v SPORTING ALFAS CC Sunday XI at Columbus Oval Albir L'Alfas Del Pi Spain Sunday March 16TH   2007, 40 overs,8 max per bowler

Alfas offer no resistance

After winning the toss and deciding to bat, Nomads C.C. dominated the afternoon as it inflicted a crushing defeat upon the Alfas Sunday team.

With the Alfas fielders failing to take any of the chances offered, Latchman duly completed his century before retiring and Padhani was unlucky to be just two runs short of his century at the end of the allotted overs but he had become becalmed and no hero to those batsmen waiting to come in. With J. Adams making an undefeated twenty-four, the final total reached a creditable 239-1. The Alfas team could consider itself to be fortunate that the total was not any higher, bearing in mind that it failed to take a wicket and its catching ability was zero, very much a function of an exhausted Asif Padhani.

The Alfas response was ineffective and very one sided,as after an early run out the top order fell to stumpings off Blumberg and Padhani. Watson cleaned up the tail and ancient Jack Hyams claimed a wicket. Asif Padhani had a useful day complementing his 98* with 3-14.
