Ahmed Elech Steers Nomads to 5 wicket win

Stowe School’s beautiful 1st XI pitch was looking a real picture for Nomads’ annual visit to take part in the Stowe Templars’ cricket week. Skipper James Hamilton won the toss and elected to field, to the horror of several Nomads who had never played at Stowe before. It soon became clear that the outfield was running quick, and the wicket (although tinged with green) was typically placid. Stowe’s batsmen got stuck in, notching a stand of 67 for the first wicket before James Hamilton (1/26) elicited a false shot from Pearson which was well held at cover by Pratyush Ramesh. Despite Charlie Moore accounting for the other opener, Stowe reached lunch after 31 overs at a comfortable 139/2.      A magnificent lunch was eschewed by Jack Ellis, whose asceticism was rewarded with a much improved showing in his second spell, pinning Rhys Noble LBW, nicking off Alan Bowman, and cleaning up James King. His figures of 3/39 were a fine effort on a wicket offering little help for any type of bowler. With Charlie Moore (15 overs, 3/60) at the other end bowling a long spell, Nomads applied considerable pressure to the scoring rate, which led to a double strike for Moore as Watkins was stumped by Duncan Ellis and Davey was caught sharply at slip in the same over.   Such disciplined bowling forced the Templars captain to extend the innings past the halfway point, eventually declaring on 239/8 after 51 overs. Nomads estimated they would have around 44 overs back.   The first over of the Nomads innings was certainly explosive. Rhys Noble ran in from the school end with a light gale at his back, and the result was some of the quickest bowling Nomads have faced in recent years. Thierry Pascal nicked to slip where he was bravely held by Ell, and Rhythm Bedi inside edged onto his off stump. At 1/2 after one over, Nomads were in some strife.   Happily, Pratyush Ramesh came in at 4 and, in combination with Vic Kandampully, set about building a long partnership of 84 for the third wicket. Kandampully faced down the whirlwind and stole increasingly cheeky singles, while Ramesh got off to a flyer by taking the attack to both opening bowlers whenever they offered a short ball. This gambit was successful and Ramesh was soon celebrating his 50 from only 46 balls, with 11 fours – a fantastic innings given the bowling and the scoreline at the start. Just when it looked as though Ramesh might win the day on his own, there was a short rain break that saw the captains and umpires agree to add 15 minutes to the game clock to compensate. On resumption, Ramesh was well held by Bowman for 58.

However, Ahmed Elech came in and took the score well past 100 before Kandampully played around a straight one from Bowman for 25. But this loss did not inhibit Nomads, as Elech and Sarthak Thakur put on a fantastic partnership of 113 at a run-a-ball rate, milking the Stowe change bowling for numerous singles, leavened by occasional boundaries. Both batsmen reached half-centuries before Thakur was bowled for 52 in the search for quick runs, with victory only 16 away. However, Elech kept going to the end, in the company of Jack Ellis (4*), finishing on 86* and passing the Templars total with 7 balls to go, and 5 wickets still in hand.

A very creditable victory to which nearly every Nomads player made a significant contribution. The determined bowling and fielding performance on a flat wicket was crucial. No Nomads bowlers went a more than 5 an over, and this was key to restricting Templars to a chaseable score. Moreover, James Hamilton showed captaincy wisdom beyond his years in negotiating the crucial extra 15 minutes with the Templars’ captain and experienced umpire Graham Frost. As the rain returned, many Nomads enjoyed the taste of Corona beers fresh from the fridge to toast an excellent run-chase.
