Nomads in Spain Tour October 18-23

Nomads in Spain October 18-23 2012

A large party visited L’Alfas Del Pi this autumn Michael Blumberg, Ranjit Latchman, Kevin Smith(& Rosemary West), Tom Brockton, Rupert Style, Jamie Dixon, Stu Reeve, Shameen Neebar, Lee Stevens, John Hardy, Jack Hardy, James While(& Mum +Norman & Mark), Nigel Hussey, Oliver & Christine Croom-Johnson, Charles Peerless,Ricci Achillini, Suraj Vithiani, Chris Brown. Ken & Sylvis Nuttal, Tony & Anna Lee.

Unfortunately the tour coincided with a blip in the otherwise endless sunshine and our Saturday match was abandoned without a ball being bowled, a premature decision as it turned out while Friday and Sunday’s game were wet and a trifle cold. Monday was a beautiful warm sunny day and for those that lingered on Tuesday so was that.

FULL SCORECARDS

On Friday our early bowling was dreadful and we never quite got back in control trying to defend a total which was some twenty runs short of par. Nomads did lend the opposition three good players, Stu. Reeve, Charles Peerless and Nigel Hussey but it was a poor performance and our first ever defeat by the Sporting Alfas Mid Week XI.  We made a sound start but it was sluggish, 28 off 7 overs and at drinks 85 runs off 20. We did accelerate scoring some 156 runs off the second twenty overs, James While hit 63 and Rupert Style just missed out on a century. After the excesses of the opening bowlers, Oliver Croom-Johnson and Tom Brockton bowled tidy spells, Croomers particulaly so, recording 8-2-24-2. However fifties from Brook(from La Manga), Hussey and Reeve provided a sufficient platform for the home side to win with one ball left despite losing a flurry of wickets as victory drew near. On Sunday the synthetic pitch was wet nevertheless we elected to bat and on what played more like a green English turf  pitch proved quite the undoing of  most our batting despite being seasoned on such pitches ad nauseam at home. After 11 overs we were but 25-2. In the event skipper Tom Brokton grafted a slow fifty and together with Lee Stevens   lifted  the Nomads to a respectable if modest total. Sporting Alfas lost wickets steadily but Geoff Evans and Chris Cooper added fifty runs and then Ben Marriner (benefiting from a dropped catch) and Cooper added 43 runs. Cooper hit the winning runs in the 39th over to give Sporting Alfas Sunday XI a rare win over Nomads. Tom Brockton keen to record at least one win on tour won the toss and inserted Forty Club of Spain on Monday for our one time game. The top order all scored runs and Dutchman de Geer hit a swashbuckling fifty. Only Chris Cooper failed to disturbed the scorers despite his runs on Sunday, posting a duck stumped by Kevin Smith. Forty Club made a very generous declaration  inviting Nomads to make 210 off what would have been a potential 39 overs. Ranjit Latcham as elegant as ever and Jamie Dixon, blasting slogger, added 81 runs in 14 overs. Dixon went on to hit 61 including two sixes. Charles Peerless ran himself out in comical fashion so that it was left for James While and Stu Reeve to race along adding 76 runs in nine overs to give Nomads their only win of the tour with some seven overs to spare. Despite being split between two hotels the large party managed the logistics of eating and drinking quite well  and the Yellow Submarine proved to be an excellent late night venue  apart from the dirty duet of The Vale and senior Hardy.
On Sunday evening at the Classic Gourmet Restaurant the assembled mass of Nomads stood and toasted the memory of our missing tourist Jack Hyams. Those that chose the a la carte menu were unimpressed,Jack being a sensible chap would have gorged himself on the menu of the day! Sporting Alfas CC as ever proved excellent hosts and the 'English tea' was sumptuous. Nomads return in March 2013
