Nomads humbled by Oxfordshire rivals

Nomads were soundly thrashed by Tiddington CC on Saturday, the first time the visitors had played an overs game at the pretty Oxfordshire venue.

Sadly, our usual host, the genial Nick Pykett was not in the home side XI having broken a finger a week or so before dropping an innocuous caught and bowled. So veteran Bird was summoned to run the day. Nomads were “cajoled” into an overs game, with fielding circles and power plays the order of the day & 8 overs per bowler. The home side to bat.

After 16 overs they were rattling along at almost 6 an over and 85-1 represented a very good building block to what should have been an imposing 250+ score. Shawl and Hamilton had bowled gamefully without much reward and it was not until the introduction of Beddington 1st XI offie, Ben Butcher who tore through the Tidd upper and middle order to take 5-20 from 8 splendid overs. The home side had no answer to his pacy off-breaks, but Nomads were dealt a cruel blow when James While went in the hamstring and had to be carried off the field, he would take no further part in the game.

Adnan Kapadia was being savagely treated by Davis, and he was replaced by Brockton and in tandem with the returning Hamilton did offer to restore some order to he innings. Dummer took the final wicket to fall, Tiddington 213 all out off the final ball of the 40. Nomads had fought back, mainly thanks to Butcher, but also with some enthusiastic fielding to restrict the home side, to what they generally thought was a manageable run chase.

Tea (as has been for most of 2020) was BYO, and Nomads started their run chase in lovely autumnal afternoon sunshine. In the blink of an eye the game, as a contest was effectively over. Tidd’s 1st XI opening bowler, Chapman removed the in-form Kandampully, Dummer, recent centurion Bradley & Wahi all for 0 ! He was then taken from the attack by Bird who no doubt feared a very early finish, but Nomads were put further into the mire when Annas Faheem played a horrible heave to leg & Hamilton played across at straight one (also both out for 0). Nomads were 19-6, effectively for 7 as the afore mentioned While had already left the ground to make his way back to the midlands.

Brockton stood firm at the other end, but this game was over. Shawl kept him company to get 50 on the board for the visitors, but when he was dismissed, and Kapadia soon after Nomads had were 89-9. Butcher hung around stoically to see the Nomads captain through to his 50 in the 26th over, but then the Nomads off-spinner picked out Smith at mid-wicket off the bowling of Davis and the visitors were all out for 107 to lose by the wide margin of 106 runs. Chapman the pick of the Tidd bowlers with 4 scalps.

Nomads repaired to the Tiddington bar to lick their wounds and a few jugs of “Boat Race” ale were consumed in the very pleasant early evening sunshine. The Nomads President was seen supping a Rose or two, no doubt crestfallen by such a spineless display from his charges.

Three Nomads (Butcher, Brockton and Kandampully) joined Nick Pykett for a meal at the local Fox & Goat over the road from the ground to discuss the days play, where a bar-steward was discovered who bore a striking resemblance to Nomads very own Andy Stokes. The only good news that had come from the day was that Chris Page had gone at 10s for the Paralytics who were playing a game against Beddington CC. Who knows how far he would have gone at Tiddington (“out on a proper ground”). Stokes scored fifty in that match, pity he was not with us at Tiddington.

Our thanks to Tiddington, and we look forward to returning in 2021, for a more traditional (declaration) game of cricketand an improver performance from Nomads batting.
