Perry takes sixfer but Lurkers takes downs to draw

It was a sunny day at Standlake when Nomads skipper won the toss and elected to bat. The stylish Peerless fell cheaply but Heron was quick into his stride only to fall to Obolensky(famous name that) on 31. Alec Smith joined Whiteway and these two took the score to 92-2 at lunch, slow progress against some tight bowling.

Shortly after  an excellent lunch(the ‘Port’ effect) both Smith and Whiteway fell to Lee who was to have a  successful 18 over spell. At 125 the fifth wicket fell to Lee with the Nomads innings now in some trouble.  Nomads skipper Steve Hambleton, a somewhat dashing left hander and Clyde Jeavons, obdurate right hander added 45 runs when the skipper was carelessly run out. This was unfortunate as Steve looked  set for a big innings and the innings was to lose momentum. The Nomads tail included some decent batsmen and on another day they may have contributed more but this day they gave scant support to Clyde Jeavons, three more wickets (195-9). Number 11 Mathews swung lustily and the score reached 207 off 60 overs whereupon the innings was declared, Jeavons not out 25. So a series of cameos from Nomads and a fifer for Lee.

Chris Wakefield, doubtless disturbed by his Putney Heath encounter a few weeks before, fell for just 10,caught and bowled Perry. Peter Mathews removed the other opener List for 22 and indeed only one Downs batsmen after that was to achieve double figures against some accurate bowling. Indeed 33 overs from Perry and Blumberg went at just 2.63 runs an over. However despite the lack of runs from the majority of Downs batsmen, at the other end Daniel was to complete a fine century which kept the innings afloat. When number 11 Tony Lurcock took guard Nomads were scenting victory. Yet Lurkers proved equal to the task and the match was drawn with Downs 9 wickets down, 30 runs short of Nomads score. There were some murmurs about a late declaration!

With two fifers and a century to celebrate there were jugs aplenty post match and with Nomads infamous difficulty in leaving the Oxford Downs pavilion before the midnight hour there was much conviviality and liquid consumption to round off a splendid day's cricket at Standlake. Oxford Downs remain amongst the most if not the most hospital of Nomads' opponents.
