               Thwarted by the tail

On Thursday Nomads lost a high scoring close encounter with Montenotte which was a new fixture for us. Debutant Monty hit a fine century and fellow debutant Gordon hit a robust 80 to lay the basis of a big score somewhat tempered by some idiotic run outs.

However Montenotte had batting depth in reply and seemed to be coasting to victory whereupon tight bowling by Birrell and Bowden swung the balance our way, especially so when Montenotte  lost 3 wickets for 1 run still requiring 21 to win with a few overs to go.

And yet tailender Verma hit several boundaries so that the last over started with them needing 3 runs and us needing 2 wickets. We seemed to have the ascendency as Charlie Meyers struggled to hit the ball at all let alone off the square.

However the eager Verna advanced well out of his ground provoking a wild throw at the bowlers wicket from Australian Mat Birrell. Monty failed to gather it and Ted Walters in the outfield hadn't a chance so Montenotte won off an overthrow. Hm! and a good evening's imbibing was enjoyed by both sides so much so, we agreed to play Montenotte twice next season.  No more overthrows, please!
