Charlton & Wickey have great days

 

On a lovely summer's day Blumberg lost the toss once again and Barnes batted. Surridge ran into to bowl,let out a squeal, the ball sailed slowly at a great height towards the batsman who hit it for 4 runs but with  no umpire's call for no ball nor wide. Mark clutched his shoulder and retired to mid on so Daryn Williams finished off the over.Charlton Lamb then muttered that if was going to bowl it was at that end.

 

Blumberg induced Wigley to play on next over,1-4, whereupon the skipper replaced a bemused Williams with veteran Lamb who took a wicket in his second over, 1-16.

 

The pitch had been over watered and although drying out quickly in the extreme heat was suiting the slow bowling of Lamb and Blumberg. At drinks after 25 overs Barnes were 102-2 but in the first over after refreshment first Blumberg and then Williams took catches off Lamb,4-102.Lamb then took three more wickets reaching 7-52 off 20 overs and Barnes were 8-173.

 

Faure and Foulds then put on 54 runs before the declaration, at 227-8 off 53 overs, through a bold counter-attack during which Nomads dropped and avoided a series of catches which should have taken Lamb to 9 wickets and an earlier closure.His final figures were remarkable for a 67 year old 26-8-84-7. Apart from Blumberg's wicket,Williams, Patel and Abbas bowled 16 wicket less overs at the other end

 

Following a good tea Wickey Abbas and Carl Hoare made an uncertain start against some very slow and curious bowling from Gibbons and Campbell but steadily grew in confidence and then dealt allthe bowlers to a stylish mauling. They put on 154 runs in 28 overs before Hoare was adjudged lbw for 49. Sunil Patel joined wickey but after 23 more runs mishit a full toss and was caught at wide mid-on.Jeremy Lascelles and Vinoo Nath now occupied the crease for some 7 overs while adding 1 run between them.However Wickey managed to take enough of the strike totake nomads to a 6 wicket win with 10 balls to go.He had scored a magnificent 139 not out his first century and highest score to date  which at 19 years of age will be but the first of a great many.

 

Ravi Kannan of KCC came to watch a deliver the skipper with a new cricket bag. Tom Reader and Andy Stokes joined us for a drink or two or three after the match which became a very convivial evening tarnished for Russel Mann when he found he was locked out of his Mercedes Benz and was informed that it would be 5 days before new keys could be secured.

 

This was the second occasion in which Blumberg had taken a slip catch off Lamb at Barnes within the decade. The surprise,nay astonishment, with which this was greeted the second time was just as great as on the first occasion and sadly 'normal service' returned at Shenley the following Sunday.
