Tom Brockton reports

Nomads arrived at Barnes CC in good spirits and on the back of 4  wins in succession. However some 11th hour drop outs slightly weakened what would have been a sterling XI. Charlton Lamb proved what a superb tosser he was (take note Blummers) by winning to the toss and having no hesitation to bat on what looked like a docile and placid pitch, devoid of any pace but equally about as threatening as Oliver McCall once his waterworks were in full flow.

Striding out to the middle were Johnno Gordon and Tom Brockton and Johnno got proceedings underway with a crunching back foot drive that singed the surface of the fast outfield as it rocketed to the boundary rope for 4.  Those of you that have played at Barnes before know it's a fast scoring ground, so it was no surprise when the home side went on the defensive as early as the 3rd over, with scouts posted to the deep cover, deep mid wicket and long on boundaries to try and stem the flow of runs.  Brockers, in decent touch in his debut season for Nomads thrashed "the Colonel" Fould's son to the point boundary and the score registered 30 in just the 5th over.

We all know Johnno is capable of getting on the pull (the photo attached to the Wembley match report bares testament to this) however this pull was ill-advised, and Hake celebrated as the ball looped harmlessly in the air and was safely pouched. Johnno on his way for an aggressive 19 featuring 4 boundaries.  Brockers was joined by Wimbledon CC overseas pro Marty Kain, but his stay at the crease was a short one as the Colonel got in on the act for the first of three poor decisions triggering him LBW to a delivery that although clearly hitting pitched a few inches outside leg stump.  Nomads 50-2 after 9 overs.  Andy Smith was next in at no4 after cajoling Charlton/Blumberg for a post higher up the order and he showed good purpose lashing the first ball he faced straight over mid-off's head for a one bounce 4.  Unfortunately after looking in decent touch Smith was cut down in his prime by, yes you guessed it, the Colonel for a well made 18, and another LBW decision to notch onto his bed-post.

Brockers was ticking along nicely enough, but the defensive fields were starving him of boundaries, never-the-less he brought up his half century with a well timed cover drive from the bowling of the freshly introduced Rob Mathews.  The burly figure of Dave Samuels did not last long and he was on his way for a painful 5 from 21 balls and Kelvin Sutherland, having been disconnected from his Blackberry that appeared to be permanently attached to his ear for most of the day, joined Brockers. Nomads stuttering at 104-4 from 21 overs. Sutherland decided to take the aerial route off both Matthews and the leg-spin of Tom Fahy and his 27 came in quick time with couple of expertly timed "swats" on the on-side and a gorgeous straight 6 that clattered into the sightscreen no more than 8 feet from the ground.  Sutherland looked well set, and keen on a decent score, however, lightning struck for the 3rd time when the Colonel decided to raise his finger for a stumping with Sutherland looking bemused, then irritated as he was sent on his way.

Skipper Lamb joined Brockers for the final 12 overs and the pair added 75 with a  combination of well judged singles, a straight 6 from Brockers (collectors item) and Charton Lamb getting his trademark pull shot out whenever possible. Nomads ending their 40 overs on 206-5, Lamb unbeaten on 14 and Brockers 115 not out after taking 12 from the final over bowled by Hake who was the pick of the Barnes Bowlers, to drag Nomads over the 200 mark.  A slightly under-par score on such a fast scoring ground but a total on the board none the less. Nomads knew they would have to bowl / field well to restrict what on paper was a strong Barnes batting line up.

After a mediocre tea Nomads took the field with Johnno Gordon given the slope (and breeze behind) and Ian "Mac" MacKinnon from the other end with his mixture of medium pace / cutters. Blummers dropped the opener in the first over at 2nd slip, but this was not to prove too costly as Johnno struck early to remove Allen and overseas pro Rao (for a duck) leaving Barnes 29-2 off 8 overs. MacKinnon was proving unusually expensive from the other end bowling up hill and into a now stiff breeze (at least a club extra on the golf course). This brought the two danger-men from Barnes together, left handed accumulator Rob Matthews and right handed biffer Rob Reeve. The pair merrily tucked into MacKinnon who was swiftly replaced by Marty Kain's slow left arm. He bowled nicely, and but for a few errors in the field would have picked up more than his two wickets. Kelvin Sutherland was spotted on his BlackBerry on the deep-square leg boundary much to the irritation of Michael Blumberg!

Matthews reached 50 from 78 balls but then picked out the diving figure of Samuels who like Bermuda's Dwaine Leverlock tumbled to his left to take an excellent catch. The match was now in the balance and some canny field placing from senior pro Charlton Lamb dried up the runs.  Andy Smith was introduced to the attack and although he went wicketless his spell was an important one. He also induced the run out of young Ayliffe who took on Brockers arm from cow-corner only to be run out by a yard with Mark Oppe, who was impressive behind the sticks all afternoon collecting the ball cleanly from an accurate throw from the boundary edge.

Brockers was brought on to replace Smith and he immediately picked up the wicket of Reeve, clean bowled for 58 trying an ordacious shot to the vacant mid-wicket boundary.  All now rested with experienced player Harriman but when he picked out the ever safe hands of Smith at mid wicket Nomads knew they had victory in their sights.  Foulds and Fahy were now behind the 8 ball and although they swung the bat with gusto a boundary was needed off the final ball to give Barnes Victory. Only a single resulted and Nomads were able to celebrate a victory by 2 runs and the closest finish of the season thus far.

Drinks a plenty were consumed in the Barnes bar, with Barnes CC Charman Harriman generously buying a few jugs that were warmly received by the Nomads players.  Bill Rodwell joined the clan for a few beers post match.
