Nomads run chase runs out of steam

Despite all the drop outs Nomads enjoyed a good day’s cricket at Eton College last Sunday. Ramblers won the toss and elected to bat on what proved to be an excellent batting track.

asdfg

David MacVicar returning to Nomads colours after several decades opened the bowling with Bill Johnson, a combination of inswing seam and offspin. Unfortunately Hawke was missed at slip off Johnson’s first ball but these two induced many more errors despite the good surface. Eventually at 53 MacVicar bowled England  who chopped the ball onto his stumps, reward for a good spell of tidy bowling. Johnson who flighted away at the other end was eventually rewarded with the wicket of Morris at 99 and then took two more before lunch 150-4.

sdfg

Paul Lack had replaced MacVicar and after lunch Blumberg replaced Johnson. These two took five more wickets but suffered some punishment as well especially from the two giants,Halsey and Lamb who added 49 for the 7th wicket.  Brad Murphy had two good stumpings to remove Rambler’s skipper Taylor on 45 and later off MacVicar removed tailender Gray. Nigel Keess took a fine catch on the boundary off Blumberg.

asdfg

Ramblers had reached 281 off 54 overs which was probably some 30 runs more than we had bargained for at lunch.Yet it was a very good batting track and Nomads would have over 50 overs to chase.

asdfg

A good start was required and a couple of big innings. In the event Jeremy Lascelles and Nigel Keess added 58 for the first wicket by tea despite some swift bowling from Rupert Stanning and a dropped catch in the slips. Lascelles was out immediately out after tea whereupon Keess was joined by Bill Johnson who looked at once in splendid form.Sadly he was soon out, bowled(rather careless, we thought). Peerless and Keess then took charge of the innings adding 92 mainly againt the Ramblers spinners. Peerless having just hit a huge six for his fifty then defended the next ball but missed and was bowled.

asdfg

With twenty overs to go Nomads required 132 but once Peerless fell the momentum fell and Keess lost strike. Nigel under pressure to force the rate hit two two good shots off Stanning but then miscued a third and was caught for an excellent 78.

asdfg

Vince Gavin went merrily on reaching an undefeated 24 but for the rest of the lower order the task was too great and several wickets fell attempting the impossible, even so Charlton Lamb stroked two boundaries. The skipper smashed the third last ball of the day for four but blocked the last two to achieve a honourable draw.

asdfg

Given the drop outs that resulted in a somewhat unbalanced team this was a good performance played in excellent spirit.

asdfg

The catering was wonderful and Nomads quashed a good volume of ale in two Datchet hostelries afterwards.
