But for another bowler and no run outs

Nomads lost Sunday's match to a young Headley side who won the toss and put us in. Two run outs seriously squashed our ambitions to post ahuge total.Opening and looking very solid Charles Peerless unwisely took on a young fielder's throw and lost by some yards.Later on just as we seemed to be accelerating Nathan Lamb drove mightily straight  back at the bowler who in trying to get out of the way diverted the ball onto the stumps so running out Andy Hill who had just reached fifty. Nomads innings was a series of cameos when we needded one or more batsmen to post a major innings.Jamie Lane was elegant as ever and Nathan Lamb timed the ball sweetly until he decided to pull a rank long hop for six.Unfortunately the ball was straight and kept low. Hugo Morris revealed a prowess  totally hidden on tour in Goa last February and Andy Smith sruck a mighty six to spoil Waller's impressive bowling figures: indeed Waller, 14-6-24-3 restricted Nomads scoring rate with an exhibition of  accurate seam bowling. Senior Nomads Charlton Lamb struck two boundaries at the end ,perhaps he should have batted higher.

Nomads needed a much bigger score than this since we had only  one bowler, Andy Smith. Containing a decent batting side over 35 overs on the Headley ground was going to be well nigh impossible. In the event Nomads fielded pretty well and Andy took four wickets. He might easily have had some more, so with another front line bowler or two, this may have been a better contest. Charles Peerless took up the challenge of opening the bowling and when he asked for a break Marty Seiger tossed up three overs in which he bowled one pearler but otherwise received severe punishment. There were a couple of run out chances and a few boundary catches that Colin Bland or Jonty Rhodes would have taken but this was very much the home side's day as they raced home in the bright evening sunlight. The original squad incuded James While and Dawood Shah and we sorely missed them both!

This was a match played in very good spirit  and Nomads had to be politely asked to drink up as the clubhouse was closing. We did and ended up in a pub in Tadworth for further libation.
* For the record-Russ Mann,Hugo Morris and Nathan Lamb declined to bowl and Blumberg and Lamb were injured as far as bowling is involved!
