Bowlers Dominate two powerful batting sides
Nomads won what became a close encounter as the Hurlingham tail wagged most productively. There were but 12 runs between the sides when, to the astonishment of many, Blumberg, at first slip, caught the obdurate number eleven off Joe Ireland's bowling.
Earlier Nomads invited to bat struggled to post a decent score despite an impressive line up. Booksbank of Esher CC bowled unchanged up to lunch and finished with an impressive (5-75). That Nomads made any total was almost entirely due to debutant Charlie Hill who scored 89 before hitting a full toss straight to a boundary fielder. Joe Ireland and Andy Peters helped the cause as did a few mighty blows from Neil Senn.
Andjel who 'bowled' fifteen overs was finally called by the square leg umpire for throwing but surely should get his action sorted out sooner rather later before formal complaints pour in.
Nomads considered they had a strong spin attack but were slim on seam. However While and Senn soon had the Hurlingham innings in tatters at 32-5 then 60-6 both taking three wickets each. The home side showed stiffer resistance against the spin of Ireland and Blumberg, the next two wickets putting on 42,102-8. At this point tea was taken. After the tea interval Andjel and Brooksbank staged a revival that threatened to turn the game on its head aided by a few lapses in the field from Nomads. As the tension mounted so the boundaries were loudly applauded and the score had reached 152 when Andjel, stranded some way down the wicket but deceived by the flight, was out lbw to Joe Ireland.
Brooksbank skillfully protecting his number eleven partner steadily took the score ever nearer the required total despite the late introduction of our trump card left arm spinner Guy Bullpit who finished with figures of 6-1-11-0.
So there was great relief and celebration in the Nomads camp when that catch was snapped up.
There was a difference of 13 in the extras total in favour of Nomads essentially in byes so Chris Friderichs' contribution behind the stumps proved crucial. Notwithstanding the superb contribution of the bowlers Nomads owed a great deal to Charlie Hill's mature innings on debut, may it be the first of many to come.
