On a beautiful sunny day Nomads‘ first over was electric producing 19 runs as 'Kiwi' Elliott Brookes hit 3 x 4s & 1 x 6. Then in true Nomads style 2 wickets fell and we were 24-2. Hess and Sutherland carried on this somewhat carefree assault including an over which went for 21. Thankfully Merrow’s catching let them down dropping both batsmen before John Hess skied one and was caught, 105-3. Mark Surridge played a superb cover drive and then hung his bat out to dry and was caught behind, 121-4. Russ Mann joined Kelvin and these two survived until lunch 139-4 off 24 overs.

An excellent lunch was completed with an ample supply of Port and this inspired Sutherland who smote the bowling with renewed vigour to reach an excellent century, his third for Nomads in UK.

As the declaration loomed a few swipes and a run out gave Merrow the satisfaction of several more wickets after the Mann/Sutherland partnership ended (105 runs). So we declared at 260-8 giving ourselves near 50 overs to bowl out Merrow.

Had an early catch off Trueman not been dropped Merrow may have succumbed for a modest total. In the event after 4 wickets had fallen to Brookes and Clarke for 54 including a sharp chance behind the stumps by Fanthorpe, Trueman and Riddell counter-attacked. Not without luck they put on 112 runs in double quick time somewhat aided by some shoddy and geriatric Nomads fielding. One acrobatic attempt to catch Riddell was put over for a boundary for a 6.

The return of Brookes from the road end resulted in a good catch by Sutherland to remove Riddell and then Blumberg bowled Trueman. Two more wickets apiece from Brookes and Blumberg brought the spirited Merrow innings to an end with victory by 65 runs.

Perhaps the celebrations the night before after a close victory over our friends from Kensington effected Merrow’s catching in which case thank you KCC.
