Kiwi debutants star in Nomad's Win
Nomads comfortably won their Wednesday encounter with S & M on a fine afternoon. Nomads had several debutants including Shaun Coffey on a brief trip from New Zealand, Kevin Laundon chairman of Sporting Alfas Spain on a visit to his homeland*, Peter Rochford from Dulwich CC, Marty Kain from Wimbledon, Eddie Cash from Caribbean CC and Hugh Pilkington from Barnes. Furthermore with Ollie Smith playing there were four in their twenties and younger, providing some fine fielding and long throws to the gloves just above the stumps.
It was unfortunate that skipper Charlton lost the toss and as weak a side as we have ever played at S & M elected to bat.
Veteran seamers David MacVicar and Kevin Laundon bowled for the most part tidily and removed the top three for 44. On completing their eight overs each Marty Kain, left arm spin and Eddie Dash, right arm much flatter offspin, took over.
Foster struck some mighty blows off Marty when he tossed it invitingly up before being caught in the deep.The obdurate Mike Bartolo was run out by a direct hit from Shaun Coffey and despite some comedy at the crease from Matzen and ‘PD’ the innings closed at 107 off 33.2 overs.
After an excellent tea, Pilkington and Coffey opened to the flighted fiflth of skipper Chris Reardon and the left arm seam of teenager Booth-Cole. Reardon was to claim a major scalp when after delivering a couple of wides Pilkington streatched for a long hop and hit it straight down mid on’s throat. Ollie Smith joined Coffey and although rusty occupied the crease until the game was won. At the other end Coffey made merry losing several balls as he smote a fluent 83 including 12 fours and 2 sixes.
There was some confusion at the end of the game as Chris Reardon suggested we carry on batting and then they could have a second go. In the next few overs of the non game Coffey and Andy Smith goy out to huge swipes after hitting sixes and young Ollie was run out. After Laundon and Kain had scored a few runs there was a conference between the skippers as to what the actual format was. Reardon suggested Nomads bat 40 overs and then S & M have the missing overs from their earlier innings ie 6.4 overs.This seemed to be a somewhat pointless exercise as S & M were never going to score over 100 in 6 overs even with two Nomads, Pilkington and MacVicar, having left early.Without resolving the matter Chris Reardon declared the proceedings terminated leaving players on both sides somewhat mystified.
Nomads lingered long, savouring the ales and lagers and when the opposition skipper came to bid farewell he greeted all the youngsters as Wimbledon Cricket Club. Steve Marions and Charles Fellows-Smith joined us for the latter part of the game and we all left save Eddie puzzled as to what his Lottery scheme was yet glad it seemed to be so successful and for the drinks he bought!
