Ranjit take the gloves and bags three on debut

Nomads were back in Spain for their regular pre-season tour and the usual curtain raiser, against the midweek XI of Sporting Alfas proved to be an entertaining encounter. Skipper Michael Blumberg won the toss and unsurprisingly elected to bat. Ranjit Latchman and Rupert Style opened the innings for the visitors and put on a watchful partnership of 75 with opening bowler Aslam Ashraf bowling impressively, before Latchman was bowled by the vastly improved youngster Gomez-Brown for a classy 34. Tom Brockton, in at no3, and Style then upped the rate with a partnership of almost 150, taking a particular liking to the gentle seam of veteran Jeff Bellis and 1st XI all-rounder Kevin Laundon. Indeed runs were flowing to such an extent that one point only two players were saving the single! Style was dismissed for an excellent 81 as he advanced down the wicket to Bellis, the canny seamer pushing the ball wide outside off stump and Style was found well short of his crease.  Sajjad Shawl (5) and debutant David Nicholson (18) were dismissed relatively cheaply and this left Brockton and Stu Reeve together for the final 7 overs where a further 68 runs were amassed.  Aslam Ashraf was brought back into the attack, but the extra pace on the ball was to both Northwood cricketers liking and his solitary returning over was dispatched for 17 runs. Laundon intrusted himself with the final over and his mixture of seam up and cutters ensured Brockton was left stranded on 97 not out and Reeve a pugnacious unbeaten 27. Nomads finishing on a strong 293-4 from their allotted 40 overs.  The midweek XI knew they would have to go some to chase almost 300, but the nature of the wicket meant that anything was possible. Shawl and Reeve took the new ball and their extra pace and height generated some steepling bounce. However McInstry and Evans added 75 at a sedate pace, and it took a inswinging Yorker from Brockton in his first over to dismiss the former for 33. Evans and Cooper soon followed and Nigel Hussey once again impressed with the ball taking 2-44.  However, it became painfully clear that this total was beyond the Alfas XI.  Never-the-less Kevin Laundon (48 not out) swung his willow gamefully and although President Michael Blumberg dropped something of a sitter at short mid-wicket the fielding was generally sharp.  A few late nights in the Yellow Submarine would soon change this!   James Weymes, although a tad expensive picked up a wicket on debut and Nomads ran out deserved winners by over 70 runs in this opening encounter of the 2012 tour. The big test would follow the following day vs Sporting Alfas 1st XI and the broad blades of Messer’s Phil Pennick and captain of Spain Marc Spencer.

Nomads thrashed as Pennick & Spencer hits unbeaten tons

After a resounding win and generally professional performance in the first game spirits in the Nomads camp were generally high for the biggest match of the tour vs Sporting Alfas 1st XI. Featuring a number of current and ex Spain international players this was to be a real challenge. It was thus unfortunate that half the team had left the 'Yellow Submarine' Bar at 6.00am.  Skipper for the day Tom Brockton, in very dark glasses, won the toss and elected to bat, a high risk strategy with hung over batsmen, opting to open with fellow Northwood cricketers Nigel Hussey and the ever-green and sober Ranjit Latchman who had looked in fine touch the previous day. Alas Hussey was well taken off the 2nd ball of the day snicking a delivery from Phil Pennick into the bucket hands of the Spanish captain Mark Spencer at 2nd slip. James Weymes (14) was soon to follow, ballooning an attempted hook shot straight up off the bowling of Gomez Brown and it was only a well crafted but sluggish partnership of 50 between Latchman and the dependable Rupert Style that got Nomads past the 80 mark.           However, when looking well set Style (25), Latchman (29) and then Ronnie Patel for a golden Globe in his first innings all departed in very quick succession and Nomads had stumbled to 89-5 from 22 overs. Brockton and Stu Reeve got Nomads over the 100 mark with a series of well timed drives and Reeve in particular took a staggering liking to the bowling of Jonny Howden as he went at nearly 10 an over. Brockton at the other end was having his usual duel with Kevin Laundon and the pair put on a much needed partnership of 130 before Brockton was stumped off the leg-spin bowling of Marc Spencer for 65. Reeve (73 not out) and David Nicholson (3 not out) added a few extra to the total and after 40 overs Nomads had scrambled their way to 235-8. Certainly well below par, but something to defend if the bowlers did their job.
Unfortunately it was not to be the case as Pennick and Spencer tore into the visitors attack and we missed Spencer early in the slips. The usually skillful Sajjad Shawl was inapproriately shod, could not find his rhythm and  went for 76 from his 8 overs. Reeve’s outswingers were knocked around with ease, Brockton’s medium pace was treated with contempt and James Weymes was dispatched for 10 an over. Even Mr Cricket himself Nigel Hussey who was full of wickets the previous Autumn proved to be ineffective.  Pennick was shelled by Ronnie Patel when on 65 and again by Sajjad Shawl after he had passed three figures, both off the bowling of skipper Brockton, but with that apart both players demonstrated what can be done on such a flat and consistent synthetic pitch. Nomads fielders were motionless as ball after ball was dispatched to the boundary. Even the Brearely esq Michael Blumberg was found to have no advice or input when asked for his learned opinion, “some wickets would be handy”……  Sporting Alfas reached their target with plenty of overs to spare, both men scoring thoroughly deserved unbeaten hundreds and a somewhat dispirited Nomads XI retired to the bar at the Clive Woodbridge Oval to lick their wounds. The batting after this unbeaten opening pair was as weak as Alfas have ever put out against us on a Saturday.

Nomads show no mercy to young and weak side

In complete contrast to the day before  Nomads batsmen, on Sunday, scored at a much better run rate from the outset to set a large total off some very friendly bowling. which proved way beyond Sporting Alfas 2nd XI's capacity to chase. Only two batsmen reached double figures providing Nomads bowlers including occasional guest Dhondri excellent figures.

A Close encounter

A tired and battle weary Nomads took the field for the final time at the Clive Woodbridge Oval to play the veterans of the 40 Club of Spain, who were featuring a few familiar faces but also some fresh “youngsters”. No Paul Taylor because of a long standing knee injury, so the average age of the 40 Club was closer to 40 than 65 for the first time in many a year.  Skipper Ranjit Latchman won the toss and elected to bat and opened with the potentially explosive partnership of Sajjad Shawl and Spencer Dawes, with a combined height of 12”7 and two incredibly heavy bats the plan was to get Nomads off to a flyer. Alas both fell cheaply to the wily seam bowling of Kevin Laundon, as did Nigel Hussey, victim of another dubious LBW decision.  This left Nomads in a spot of bother at 75-3, but with the inform Rupert Style at the crease a score of 250 was still a possibility.  Alas, he fell to Jonny Howden’s innocuous dibbly-dobblers for a well made 43 and David Nicholson also departed soon after off the bowling of Braithwaite. Nomads 118-5 off 26 overs.  Tom Brockton and Stu Reeve took up the cudgels added a near century partnership in 14 overs to drag Nomads up to 214, with the returning Kidgell being dispatched to the boundary on several occasions and George Wambeke (who had arrived late after his car broke down on the motorway) also going at 6 an over. Wambeke did have the last laugh and had Brockton stumped for 69 as he advanced down the wicket in the penultimate over. Reeve and James Weymes added further useful runs to enable skipper Latchman to declare on 227-6 after 42 overs with Reeve unbeaten on 43.  Tea was taken but the once statuesque figure of Sajjad Shawl was now reduced to that of a wizened old man as he winced in pain on Syliva Nuttall’s treatment table, he would be unable to take the field.  Brockton (also not fully fit after amusingly pulling a muscle in his left arse-cheek trying to reverse sweep Johhny Howden earlier in the afternoon) and Reeve opened the bowling and kept things tight, with Reeve picking up two deserved wickets. Brockton was replaced by James Weymes (4-59) who bowled an excellent spell, picking up wickets on a regular basis, but Geoff Evans was still there and was looking ever more assured at the crease. Wymes supplied the coup de grass by clean bowling the dangerous Laundon and then Braithwaite with successive deliveries, to swing the game back in Nomads favour. However Evans had other ideas and his expertly crafted century meant that 18 runs were required off the final over. The first two deliveries from Hussey disappeared for 4, this was crunch time. Loitering at  short square leg was the President M.E Blumberg and he pulled off an outstanding stop with Kidgell lacerating the ball at him, Blumberg stuck out both palms and no run was scored! This proved to be the turning point, as after a couple of expertly placed deliveries from Hussey 6 runs were needed off the final ball and Kidgell could only scamper 2 off a mistimed hoik out to Spencer Dawes on the boundary. The match was drawn, probably the best game of the tour (certainly the closest) and the players retired to the pavilion for a well deserved beer and more tales of daring-do!
