Nomads suffer heavy defeat
With a strong batting line up including the elegant Zahid Shah plus the return from injury of paceman Tony Smiley Nomads won the toss and elected to bat first with some confidence. Alas the opening pair fell cheaply. Zahid Shah, always a high class batsmen, was immediately at ease stroking the ball to the boundary regularly but at 63 he lost Blumberg and then just as a century looked inevitable he was caught and bowled by Wright for 73. Golooba soon followed so Nomads were 134-5. Whiteway batting in the middle order now dug in finding a solid partner in Willis and these two added 46 runs whereupon Willis was stumped for 29. After that it was a procession as three wickets fell for 10 runs all to the returning Wilkinson. Whiteway with Mathews negotiated some five runs to take the total beyond 200 at which point the innings was declared with Tony on 49 not out and on the fifth ball of Wilkinson's unblemished 19th over. That is what the scorebook says! Does anyone remember the match?
After Tea the Old Millhillians openers put on 52 before Smiley bowled Metzger. Despite a line up of decent bowling practitioners on this afternoon they were to toil to no effect as Harley and Kirkham put on 132 for the second wicket. Smile returned for a second spell and took two more wickets including Harley for 87 but Kirkham and Bunyard took Old Millhillians to an overwhelming victory in 34 overs. This was Nomads first visit to Headstone Lane and what a defeat ! Nomads were to return for another seven years, the last game scheduled in 1989.
Subsequently Old Millhillians Cricket Club merged with Totteridge CC and the Headstone Lane ground was sold?. It is now the home of Harrow St Mary's CC
