Delayed Declaration costs Nomads victory
Having lost several matches to a wet September it was good to finish off the season with full game just into October with our traditional final match opponents Leatherhead.
Despite leaving themselves only 36 overs to bowl Leatherhead out, with the host club on 73-8 it looked like Nomads would finish the season with a win but some sturdy late resistance from numbers nine and ten took the innings to within an over of safety before the ninth wicket fell. A bye removed veteran Clive Huggins from the strike and Emsley batted out the draw finishing on 26 not out.
Earlier Nomads had won the toss and elected to bat first but progress was slow. Indeed after 20 overs Nomads had only made 58-2. The next 20 saw a further 80 runs added as Terry Hills(59) speeded up making useful partnerships with Lamb and Mann. However taking a historical view Nomads need more runs before declaring. Sadly it took 47 overs before the skipper felt safe. A protracted Tea further reduced the potential overs left to just 36.
An outstanding spell from Andy Marshall plus wickets from Blumberg and Oatway nearly pulled off victory but on reflection a few more overs would been invaluable.
Notwithstanding the disappointment of failing to win Nomads linger late at the Leatherhead Clubhouse before safely driving home.
There was a curious incident at the start of the second over as the skipper off his one step run up was 'no balled' by the teenage umpire. Click here for the full story.
