Nomads secure easy win
The Nomads embarked on the John Lyon School on Harrow-on-the-Hill this week. Captain Tom Marshall negotiated the toss and the Nomads batted first on a used wicket. Dan Lucas and John Thornton opened the batting. Lucas (of Vic Kandampully’s Blackheath CC) received a horrible ball that leapt from a length and was gloved through to the keeper in the first over of the day. This brought Vic to the crease. He and JT put on 32 over the next 8 overs. JT picking off plenty of bad balls bowled by the schoolboys and Vic opting to go over the top of the in-field on more than one occasion. Vic eventually was run out in unfortunate circumstances. Vib “Velcro Badge” Yadav then came to the crease. After scores of 95 and 96 last season against the school in their cricket week, it was safe to say that he enjoyed batting here. After being dropped at cover first ball, Vib went onto score 94 off 79 balls before being caught at backward point while reverse sweeping. JT also fell in this time for a well worked 22 on a tough deck. Ealing CC’s overseas 16-year-old Aaryan Sen got 16 before being run out first ball after lunch and the Skipper Marshall was then caught and bowled of his own brothers bowling whilst trying to kick on. Ex Oxford University Blue Joe O’Gorman then blasted a quick fire 31 (mostly from slog sweeps) which boosted the Nomads over the 200 mark. Professor Page and Tony MacDonald-Barker both fell for naught which saw the end of the innings. The 205 set by the Nomads was an extremely strong score; in fact, it is the highest score at John Lyon this season. This shows the reality of how bad the wicket really is. The Nomads had a 50-minute session before tea to knock out the John Lyon top order…And they did so. First ball of the innings saw the opening batsman push the ball into the covers, which Joe O’Gorman fielded and threw into the bowlers end to run out the other opening batsman who was attempting the second run. A great start for the Nomads. Opening bowler Neerav Trivedi went onto take 2-13 from his 5 overs which included the wickets of the opening batsman (caught behind) and John Lyon’s number 4 (bowled). Captain Tom Marshall kept up the pressure at the other end with 4 overs for 5 runs. The introduction of young left arm spinner Aaryan Sen saw 2 wickets fall in the first over after tea. Sen finished with figures of 5-2-5-4. Page and MacDonald-Barker bowled in tandem at the middle order without too much luck. The young batsmen had no idea how to play the duo with not many runs coming off both of them combined. Page finished with figures of 8-7-2-2 and MacDonald-Barker with 7 overs for 16. An excellent bowling partnership. Ex First Class leg-spinner Joe O’Gorman got the final wicket of the day with a Yorker to John Lyon’s number 11. John Lyon were bowled out for 50, meaning that the Nomads won by 155 runs. Thank you to all who played, I hope it was as enjoyable for you as it was for me to run. Until next time.
