Dr Wilkins bowls Nomads to victory

Nomads brought a much stronger side to Ditchling than was the case in 1981 and almost an eleven, only one player was borrowed from Ditchling and a useful one as we had no regular wicket keeper.

Although losing Allen Abramson for a duck the dashing Stafford Etienne and Mike Willlis then added 104 before Willis fell to Williams. Shortly after Etienne was caught out for 78 and Wiliams snapped up big hitting James Drayton for just 2. This was a bit of a mini collapse.

'Rasta ' Ernie Lecointe and Michael Blumberg then added 110 runs for the fifth wicket. Any innings of 'Rasta' Ernie was a merry entertainment and this was just such including two 6s and  five 4s. Charlton Lamb, our best bat, then joined Blumberg and the innings was soon declared at 242 off 46 overs. Ditchling's Williams recorded respectable figures of 3-22 off a mere 6 overs.

In reply Ditchling made a steady start reaching 49 with out loss. The innings then floundered as Dr Mike Wilkins swept the rest of Ditchling's batting aside finishing unchanged with 19.4 overs taking 7-44. Lecointe and Leahy took one wicket each and then Lamb, a late addition to Nomads attack, picked up 2-8. Nomads had won by 137 runs.

A resounding victory to make up for the previous year's  loss and another memorable day thanks to  Ditchling's generous hospitality.

Nomads played Ditchling from 1978 to 1987. Unfortunately we retain only the scorcebooks for 1979,1981 and 1982. All the rest for those years are missing including 1984 when the Hon Sec had his best bowling figures for Nomads 19 3 64 8 so we must have had the scorebooks at some time. After recording these figure Allen Abramson remarked "Well if you bowl 19 overs anyone could take ten wickets! Thanks Allen. Two days later Kim Owen-Browne arrived to play for another side on Friday of Cricket week and aspying the details of the Nomads match displayed exclaimed "Blimey Bloomers ! but he is not a bowler".Thanks Kim.

Another team playing in Ditchling's cricket week was Harrogate CC who made an annual tour to Sussex with a large party. As a result some Harrogate players subsequently played for Nomads at Ditchling, in particular Tony Tudor.

The Nomads fixture came as several Nomads such as John Nagenda, Paul Maloney and Michael Blumberg played for Stoics CC and Gerald Plumb's XI at Ditchling. Indeed Nagenda became something of a legend among the Ladies of Ditchling. Many years later 2010? Michael Blumberg turned out for the Stoics in Ditchling cricket week. During one of the intervals an older member of Ditchling took Blumberg along to an adjoining marque  to introduce him to the assembled Ditchling grandees. One formidable striking Lady of a certain age remarked " I remember Nagenda but I don't remember  You! "Thank You Madam"….. After this Stoics match having eaten a good supper I returned my plate to the kitchen whereupon the lady in charge turned to her daughter and said ” This is Mr Blumberg who nearly lead me astray when I was your age”. So some did remember me. Phew!

Should anyone have any of those missing books or just the scorecard do let us know.
