Close Draw Honours Even Ten Nomads arrived in good time but the eleventh, a guest from Kent, cried off with apologies that morning. The skipper lost the toss and Sandwich elected to bat.
Nomads bowlers were to have a better day than a year ago. Hamilton removed a distraught Collins caught and bowled then on the same score Tim Hyam had the other opener caught by Hamilton, 35-2.
Hills with J Smith added 63 then the same with B Smith whereupon Butcher had them both caught by J Smith who was by now subbing for us,163-5.
Just a Nomads sensed a modest total Carney let loose and he and Brown added 69 before a returning Hamilton bowled him for 58. Sandwich declared on 229-6 off 46.5 overs.
In reply Nomads lost Elech early to an aerial drive towards extra cover. This was exactly the position the exasperated Sandwich captain had spent some time getting the fielder to move to so he was full of merriment when Elech left.
Simon D’Ardennes and debutant Eoin McGrath against some decent bowling put on 162 before McGrath was caught on the boundary for an aggressive 81. Simon now changed gear and the Nomads score was steadily moving towards target despite Henry Colburn struggling at the other end. Simon reached his century with an over to go. Nomads needed ten to win off the last over. The youthful Sandwich were mainly defending the boundary. Simon hit the first ball mightily but straight and fielded, 9 to win. Henry charged the next ball, missed and so was stumped. Then somewhat incongruously Jeremy Lascelles strode to the crease. Jeremy played and missed at his first ball without manufacturing a bye. Next ball he missed but managed to pad it away for a bye,8 to win, 7 to tie. Simon swung mightily but again his shot was fielded just short of the boundary,7 to win.Jeremy blocked the last ball and Nomads thus finished on 223.
A creditable performance by Nomads especially Simon and Eoin and ably skippered by Ben Butcher.
Sandwich laid on catering in the evening and so we supped well while a large crowd of locals enjoyed some entertainment seated one metre apart.
Our match was part of ten day cricket week put on by Sandwich with entertainment each night. All credit to our hosts for staging such a festival in the midst of ECB Covid restrictions.
Nomads played Sandwich Town for five years some four decades ago including it for several seasons as part of the tour to Paris when we travelled there by Ferry.
