David Drummond Alexander

David Alexander was introduced to the Nomads by Ian Crombie. He played enthusiastically for almost two decades 1960s & 70s including Nomads tours to Denmark and Belgium. However his great and enduring contribution to the Nomads club was in three roles. Firstly as Honorary Secretary and then as President for some 25 years succeeding the untimely death of CAR Norton. David maintained an administrative discipline over Nomads affairs which has not always been evident before or since! Then we made him President Emeritus in 2003 which post he held until his death. Although he started off in the travel business after Oxford he then took to the Law in preference, becoming a partner at Norton Rose Botterell and Roche. For many years the club would hold committee meetings at these city offices well stocked with liquid refreshment. In retirement David became a Trustee of the Cutty Sark Trust where there was held a very well attended celebration of his life. David’s brother Sandy also played for the Nomads as did his two nephews, Patrick and Charles.

David wrote a history of his Indian Army Regiment and indeed he and his wife Gina attended Nomads Centenary Tour matches in Delhi December 2002 including the Lagaan Match. He also penned his memoirs which include a substantial tome on Nomads and which is published on this website. He spoke at the Nomads centenary dinner giving the Sidney Caulfield Toast. Indeed he was an enthusiastic speaker whether scheduled or impromptu!
