omads 2023 season began with the first Winter net at Lord’s on February 16th. The first gathering was the AGM on March 6th and the first match played was in Spain on March 10th. The opening UK match should have been on Good Friday April 7th but the foul Spring weather meant we began on April 24th. In fact by May 10th seven matches had been cancelled due the wet weather.. The summer continued erratically until in Autumn it was splendid . Nomads won 34 matches out of 64 played which is a good record but in reality availability especially on Sundays was disappointing. In contrast the growing numbers of good young players playing primarily mid week was encouraging. The season finished on a successful note with six victories on tour, four at Sporting Alfas CC, two at Ibiza CC.Senior County and International Cricket has been on an almost exponential rise in recent years and this has drastically reduced the availabilty of many veteran Nomads especially midweek. However we are pleased to note how well many Nomads have been doing for their County and indeed England.
Sadly this year we lost three notable Nomads and learned belatedly of the demise of a fourth . John Gold, John Nagenda and Mike Hodd all made long lasting contributions to the club, on and off the field. Rob Wycherley was much younger than the other three and his recurring Cancer had already restricted his cricket career. However he was a fine player and much liked. He made a significant contribution to our centenary tour in India. Also we learned of the passing of Peter Brooke who had been a regular Nomads player in his youth and spoke at the club’s Centenary Dinner.
On a more cheery note there was a good turn out at our post season supper at the Punjab and, of course, Vice Captain Vic Kandampully married Kush. 2023 Cancelled 17 Played 64 Won 34 Drawn 10 Tied 0 Lost 20 RIP Rob Wycherley 1972-2023 died recently after a long fight with Cancer. He was a fine Batsman and Wicket Keeper and toured with Nomads in France, Spain and India. He also scored three very good centuries for Nomads. He should have lived and played for many more decades. Professor and Vice Chancellor Mike Hodd 1941-2022 a Nomads cricketer for 35 years, an elegant opening bat, occasional googly bowler and wicket keeper. He toured with Nomads in France. and was a regular EAW Shropshire tourist. He also found time to found the Canal Theatre Cafe and News Revue and much more John Nagenda 1938-2023 Vice President of Nomads CC, legendary cricketer who played for East Africa in the 1976 World Cup died March 2nd More & More. A Memorial Match was played on August 20th at Ascott House Wing between Nomads and Stoics CCs at which his son Frank and others spoke eloquently of John. John Gold(1937-2023), Nomads Senior Vice President, died in the Autumn. The funeral was on November 9th. John was a wicket keeper and he was Hon Treasurer for a long time. Although a professional number eleven he made one heroic innings at Sandhurst batting until lunch as most Nomads thought it was a 1.30 start and not 11.30. He was also a stalwart of the former Pickersgill CC and revived his local village club. Peter Brooke, Lord Sutton of Mandeville(1934-2023) played for Nomads a lot as an undergraduate and before he departed to USA to complete an MBA. A distinguished Conservative politician he retained his Nomads Cap and spoke eloquently at the club’s Centenary Dinner in 2003. He was a good friend of former Nomads President Richard Kershaw. He often replied by letter on receiving the Nomads fixture card most generously mentioning how much he relished his days playing for Nomads before he departed to USA.. .
