Roger Norton Nomads CC President & Architect

Roger Norton who was Nomads Club President until 1975 was an Architect (Hammet & Norton) and designed the Blue Circle Sports Club Pavilion 1964 now demolished.

This Pavilion was designed in the Concrete Brutalist style popular in the 1960s and located between the two grounds. The massive pre-caste concrete roof sheltered balconies and a luxurious first floor lounge giving members wonderful views on either side.

Opening in 1931 as the Bromley and District Sports Club, by 1934 it had become a country club.
Taken over by Blue Circle as a staff facility in the early 1950s, the clubhouse was situated at the junction of Crown and Turpington Lanes.
The new concrete pavilion was built further west in 1964 but the ground closed 20 years later, the original pavilion pictured here being demolished.
Subsequently designated green belt land all attempts at redevelopment have failed and it now lies derelict a testament to the abject failure of HM Government, Sports Council and ECB(Cricket Council) to save and regenerate so many wonderful Works Sports Clubs whose Company owners moved manufacturing to the Far East and or were taken over by greedy Foreign entities
