Fireworks from Olly Barnes’ bat but OWs hang on for a draw.

Nomads received a late request to fill a vacant dy in Old Westnminsters Cricket Week over a misunderstanding with Free Forresters. Despite the fact that Nomads already had a match arranged that day as well as on the following two days the club rose the task and in fact had a surplus of players. In the event the club fielded a strong anf mostly young side.

Skipper Brocton won the toss and elected to bat. However he and Gishan Herath were to fall quickly,27-2.Tom Marshall joined Ahmad elech and these two added 88 before Elech was caught out off Joe Ireland’s bowling for  67. Joe then took two more removing both Umarji(18) and Shiraz Hussain for a duck,130-5. In strode eccentric Olly Barnes who had arrived somewhat late via an epic train journey. He then blasted 80 out of a stand of 123 with Tom Marshall. when was out on 80 and the Nomads score 253-6 off 33.4 overs the innings was declared leaving Tom Marshall not out 70.

After a good tea Nomads opened with youngsters James Hamilton and Gishan Herath and both were soon rewarded with two wickets apiece including Nomad Jeremy Lascelles leaving OWs ‘ innings in some disarray at 29-4. The skipper turned to the slows, veteran Andy Marshall and Curmudgeon and ancient Professor Page and OWs dug in. Nomads failed miserably to lure, entice or encourage the OWs out of defensive mode which was a shame as arguably their two best batsmen resided at 10 and 11.Benson & Fisken put on 116 in 34 overs as Nomads rotated the bowlers. In the end the returning Andy Marshall took two wickets including OWs top scorer Fisken and the match fizzld out in to a draw with OWs 170-6 off 52 overs and Benson undefeated on 53.

Unfortunately a couple of Nomads disappointed by OWs reluctance to chase forgot they were guests and priviledged to be playing in a such  fine setting which was just bad manners and for which behaviour Nomads CC offer their apologies.

Both teams decamped to a local hostelry and drank well except for Ahmad Elech who thought Nomads were drinking in the same pub as a few of them had done before the match.

Thank you Old Westminsters for inviting Nomads CC.
