Kevin J Smith (1954-2024)

Kevin Smith died early October 2024 when Nomads were on tour in Spain. A minute’s silence was held in his memory before play on Saturday. Kevin ‘the Baron of Flatulence’ to most Nomads and also as ‘The Vale’ to many others since he was a rare supporter of Port Vale FC was a Great Entertainer at any cricket match and especially on tour. He had an endless number of risky stories, poems and songs. He had had a full career in the West Midlands before he joined Nomads but his impact was huge and hilarious. Kevin was a regular Nomads tourist playing at Sporting Alfas, Torrevieja, La Manga and Menorca. He organised a Nomads tour to Devon in 2019 and a series of excellent matches with Herefordshire Over 50s at Eastnor Castle. His last trip with Nomads was in March 2024 when he appeared to be a great form and made a characteristic amusing oration at the tour Dinner.
Kevin’s funeral and wake on October 24th was very well attended by cricketers, sisters, friends and ladies of whom he was a serious admirer. Kevin made a great contribution to the game and his presence enriched Nomads CC. He will be much missed but the stories will continue. Kevin much loved his Nomads Blazer which was buried with him!
