Nomads dispatch weak Warborough

Nomads achieved a comfortable win on Sunday at the pretty setting of Warborough & Shillingford in rural Oxfordshire.

After a 10 wicket defeat back in 2017 the visitors were surprised (read bemused) when W&S won the toss and elected to bat on a slightly mottled looking wicket. This proved to be something of a nadir as the home side were bunded out for 89. The wicket played many a trick, with balls rearing up from full of a length and also squatting along the floor. Sajjad Shawl, a fine exponent even on a feather-bed of a surface was near unplayable, his 11 overs going for just 10 runs and picking up a couple of scalps in the process.

Ickenham’s James Hamilton ran in with gusto from the other end, the young seamer bowling with pace and no lack of skill. He deserved his haul, but the home side were 4 down but with the wicket not looking like it was going get any better the Nomads brain trust were thinking even a score of 130-140 might prove challenging, as long as W&S had ample bowling stocks.

Old stager Professor Page was called into the attack and he ran through the middle and lower order taking 4 wickets with his flighted filth. Kev Smith re-deemed himself after an unusually sloppy first 20 overs behind the sticks with 2 stumpings and a sharp catch. Andy Marshall, miserly as ever at the other end took 2 for not many, 89 representing a below par score.

BYO tea and a beer in the pleasant autumn sunshine followed before Ralphs and Reeve opened up for the Nomads. They added a positive partnership and 45 was on the board before Ralphs got a shooter and has his middle pole up-ended. Class at no3, Jules Morris who took the attack to W&S hitting a massive straight 6 off “Raif” their precocious opening bowler. Sadly with 2 needed he was well taken at wide gully, but his positive knock and Boycott Esq resilience from Reeve meant Mike Pearson had the simple job of accompanying Reeve to get Nomads over the line in under 20 overs (with 35 mins remaining before the commencement of the last 20 at 5:30pm).

Nomads running out winners by 8 wickets with plenty of batting left in the hutch.

Several cold ones in the 6 Bells pub opposite the ground followed, with some hungry Nomads venturing into Henley-Upon-Thames to sample the delights of the local curry house. Tales a plenty from messers Smith and Reeve were not for young ears!

We wish Warborough & Shillingford all the best for their remaining games of 2020. Nomads travel to Chingford CC on Wednesday to play Old Victorians.

Stuart Reeve 35 not out & 2 catches

Nomads played Warborough and Shillingford  many times 1989  to 1999. Although we won occasionally there was a history of late drop outs and catastrophic batting collapses.
