Cricket World XI at Vienna Cup

The Vienna Winter Cup has been organised annually by Vienna Cricket Club since 1987. On the CW XI trip to Munich in 1991 several of the local cricketers spoke warmly about the Vienna Winter Cup. Following discussion with our Vienna hosts in 1991 Cricket World decided to send a team. Also we invited the winners of the Middlesex County Indoor competition, Sudbury Court CC to come to Vienna and so both teams played in the 1992 Cup. Because of some scheduling complications and the fact that some players had not expected us to do so well and booked afternoon Sunday flights these two teams combined to win the final.

Cricket World Magazine had organized two European Indoor competitions, one in Netherlands and another in Denmark made up of several countries indoor champions and on the second occasion the holders, Highgate CC as well..

So we agreed to amalgamate both competitions and thus the next year we invited the winners of the UK National Indoor Competition to come to Vienna and this tradition continued for some twenty years. For a decade or so the Winter Cup was also the European Indoor Championship but more recently has reverted just to the Vienna Winter Cup.

Cricket World sent a team for several more years including a mostly Female one on one occasion. Subsequently Nomads CC competed several times. One year Nomads made the trip by Minibus!

Over the years this brilliant competition has included teams from all over Europe and many from UK.
