Colin Owen-Browne 1937-1977

In July 1977 Colin Owen-Browne died at the very early age of 39. He had been a stalwart of the club especially in the years immediately following Sidney Caulfield’s death.He did much to revive and sustain the fortunes of the club when it may otherwise have declined to extinction. He had an immense enthusiasm for cricket and Nomads CC recruiting new players.

Colin had  forged a successful career in the newspaper business as an advertising supremo working for the Beaverbrook Group and then Associated Newspapers.

Nomads inadequate historical records reveal no centuries scored by Colin but a very creditable 8-43 against Leigh CC in 1970.

Colin donated a Shield to the club to honour annually a Nomad who had made a special contribution off and on the field. This shield has a habit of disappearing. If sighted please inform the club Hon Sec.

More recently his family donated a bench at Headley Cricket Club Surrey which had been a favourite fixture and ground of Colin’s in memory of Colin and his wife Barbara. Barbara attended the club’s 90th anniversary celebrations at Roehampton. Contemporary generations of Owen-Brownes have favoured the Woodpeckers CC rather than Nomads CC.
