Hagger and Lavin feast on Nomads occasional bowlers to set a score beyond Nomads
Â
I
nclement April weather meant a slight delay to the start of proceedings reducing the game to 35 overs per side. Â
Once the rain had stopped and after winning the toss, the Menorca innings again started in unfortunate fashion as Andy Tysoe, promoted to number 2 as skipper Dan Sullivan tinkered with his batting lineup, pulled up with not one, but two calf injuries in the opening over. His painful stay at the crease lasted just 7 balls. With the early wicket falling, Bill Johnson was preferred at 3 to steady the ship. In the face of some tight and at times hostile bowling from Shawl, combined with wet and windy conditions, both batters found runs difficult to come by and when Johnson, who had taken 22 balls to register a run perished for 12 in an innings more often than not associated with the resting Roy Sturgeon, Menorca had posted just 53 from 17 overs. Â
The arrival of Adam Lavin to the crease however brought not only a change in the weather but also gave Julian Hagger, who had until this point been caught between trying to be aggressive whilst seeing off the accurate Shawl (0-19) and Surridge (1-21), the freedom to attack the supporting bowlers. Â
Menorca had crawled to 25 off ten overs and just 83 off 20. What followed was an extraordinary change of gear as the pair consistently rotated strike and pounced on anything that presented a boundary opportunity, much to the Chairman’s dismay as Lavin peppered the new Toldo which had been providing much spectator relief from the blustery Southerly wind prevailing across the ground.  Â
The pair shared an unbroken 3rd wicket stand of 231 from the remaining 18 overs, Hagger carrying his bat for 121* and Lavin, posting consecutive centuries, 135* including 10 sixes and off just 63 balls. Menorca finished their innings on 284-2 (35 overs). Â
Nomads response was almost over before it started when Grant Wilson took two wickets in the opening over, Beri being caught behind by a hobbling Tiger followed by Wakefield who was well caught by Dave Rofe the very next ball. This brought Shawl to the crease who fashioned a typically aggressive 41 from just 17 balls, Wilson quickly going from the ‘destroyer’ to ‘the destroyed’ before an inspired bowling change saw the evergreen John Chipperfield find a perfect line and length to have in him trapped LBW in his first over. Â
The scoreboard pressure was always going to be tough for Nomads but Nigel Hussey, ably supported by Steve Dummer (65*), gave the visitors some hope amidst some inconsistent bowling from the home side. It was though, the home side that prevailed when Hussey was bowled for exactly 100 as Sullivan marshalled his death bowling changes with great effect to wrap up a 46 run victory. Â
Post match celebrations ensued under the Toldo as Dan Osterbury, turning a year older, was presented with an indulgent chocolate birthday cake provided by Jenny Hagger. A great evening at the club was followed by Nomads joining a wedding at the Hotel Port Mahon so a late night resulted despite the defeat.Â

Tom Brockton who declined the challenge on Saturday scored a magnificent 153 not out on Sunday
Brockton fine innings sets target beyond Menorca
A
glorious spring day awaited the Sunday teams and the turn of Nomads who opted to bat first. Tom Brockton, who came in too late to affect yesterday’s result, inserted himself back to the top of the order, a decision that would prove to be decisive as he and fellow opener Ranjit Latchman set about the MCC bowlers to post 108 for the 1st wicket just before the drinks break, that man Chipperfield again making the breakthrough to pick up Latchman for a well constructed 51.
The plan was now clear to bat around Brockton as Surridge and Wakefield made starts (18 & 25 respectively) and each contributed to 50 run partnerships. Despite a couple of late wickets Menorca couldn’t stem the tide as Brockton passed 100 and then 150, ending the innings with a masterful 153* from 107 balls, a total of 271 in 40 overs with Chipperfield the pick of the bowlers conceding a measly 2-27 off 8 overs.
The home team’s reply started watchfully as Marcus Dow and Dan Sullivan battled against Surridge who once again was economy personified in tandem with today’s opening partner Sanjay Beri and the two combined to remove Dow for 30 after Sullivan was earlier dismissed for 12 playing an ill-advised late cut.
Bill Johnson was unable to find his rhythm and his weekend ended after being bowled by Ormiston for 19. Grant Wilson, whose batting has improved considerably this season on account he can now actually see the ball with both eyes, chipped in with a run a ball 36 but despite a lusty 33 from Dan Osterbery, nobody could provide Tim Hayden, on his way to 66* with enough support to get within striking distance of the Nomads total, eventually losing by 57 runs.
A very enjoyable day indeed and thanks to Menorca’s superb hospitality. Nomads continued the evening at the Trebol Restaurant amid a fish extravaganza.
