Sajjad & Ralphs star with the bat

Nomads won a tight and tense encounter with long time adversaries and friends Maidenhead & Bray CC.  Under gorgeous blue skies and with quite an appreciative crowd watching (it was the end of season presentation afternoon) Nomads won the toss and elected to chase. As usual the ground was looking resplendent, although the heavy rain on Thursday had left the wicket a little two paced. Nomads would look to have 2nd use of the deck, which the feeling by the Nomads “brains trust” was that the track would improve as the day progressed.
Shawl and Andy Marshall took the new ball for the Nomads with Ralphs behind the stumps. Both conceded only 27 runs from their allotted 8 overs, bowling accurately but without much luck. Shawl, in particular beating the bat two or three times an over at one stage.
A change in the bowling brought a wicket immediately, although in rather strange circumstances.  Debutant Mark Pagemont (bowling gentle but accurate medium pace) deflected a ball off his own bowling to Ravi Hindocha stationed at mid-on (stationed being the operative word) a mix up and a few yes, no, yes, wait and the bails were off as Hindocha like Jonty Rhodes in the 1992 world cup swooped to remove bails and stumps.  Jon Gibson also took a fantastic diving catch at long-on off old stager Chris Page, a class catch from the Chase bat-manufacturer.
However, M&B CC were progressing nicely enough until the introduction of Naman Paropkari whose darty off breaks caused all sorts of problems for the home side. He took 4 wickets, two caught by Pagemont, and that reduced M&B CC from a total that was looking like 220-230 to 189-9.  Some final over lusty hitting from the home side captain, Matt Armstrong (or Reaper as he is known as by the M&B players….. as in “grim reaper”) did offer some additional impetus, but Nomads were happy with the total, especially in stifling conditions approaching 30 degrees.
Tea was BYO (a little disappointing), but a cold Moretti went down well.  Hindocha & Jon Gibson opened the batting and both were back in the pavilion in the blink of an eye, both casted by the impressive Aparoo. The tall left arm seamer gaining prodigious in-swing and knocking back both Nomads’ off stumps.  Paropkari and Ralps then forged a slow-but important partnership and after 20 overs Nomads were 63-2, so effectively a run a ball off the final 20.  Paropkari was then taken at mid-on, the fielder very nonchalantly running backwards  & claiming the catch 1 handed !
The game then changed as Shawl entered the arena & launched an astonishing attack, smiting a 50 in just 42 balls containing a couple of his trademark “boom boom 6s”. The chirpy M&B off-spinner was dispatched for 61 from 5 overs (to go with his golden duck earlier in the day) & Shawl & Ralphs looked to be getting Nomads to a position of strength. But alas, Shawl was cut down in his prime, a short ball kept a little low and even his broad blade could not make contact and Shawl was comprehensively bowled.
Brockton, in the unfamiliar position of no6 joined Ralphs with 62 needed from 11 overs. Ralphs was 37* and growing in confidence after his partnership with Shawl.  The pair played “tip & run” targeting some of the M&B fielders who were not on their toes in the initial part of the partnership before Ralphs took charge of proceedings, reaching his 50 with consecutive boundaries.  Brockton, dispatching his counterpart Armstrong for 2x 4s got in on the action and despite a minor scare with a close LBW shout the pair got the Nomads over the line in the penultimate over when Brockton drove through the covers.  Ralphs a fantastic innings of 62*, ”the finisher”, who is Michael Bevan anyway!
Nomads victorious by 4 wickets in a well fought contest.  Some of Nomads enjoyed a BBQ after the game & President Blumberg who had been scoring in the searing heat was feeling much more like his old self after an unpleasant dizzy spell earlier in the afternoon.
Our thanks to Maidenhead & Bray CC and in particular their skipper Matt Armstrong who seems to be single handedly keeping Sunday cricket going at the club. Good on you Matt !
Interested spectators included Tom Marshall(who took the photo) & Tom MacLeod of Harefield CC as well as Leigh Brockton.
ps 28 years ago in 1995 Andy Marshall also opened the bowling, then fast medium with a decent run up, he bowled 12 2 27 2. in the same match the President's figures were 7.1 1 19 2.See below!!
End of Play Ben Butcher and Tom Brockton lead the players off after unbeaten stand of 58 runs to secure victory
