Puri secures Nomads win
Nomads ran out worthy winners at the pretty setting of Tiddington CC where they beat a strong South Oxfordshire Amateurs XI by the margin of 6 wickets (and with 18 overs of the 20 remaining). Under blue skies and soaring temperatures Nomads won the toss and elected to insert the Oxfordshire side (who all appeared to be wearing Cherwell / Home Counties league shirts, Horsepath, Oxford Downs, Tiddington, Banbury etc etc). The wicket had apparently been playing a few tricks at “Tidd” this year, and so it proved to be again as James Hamilton & Ben Butcher reduced SoA to 38-4 after 12 overs. Things did not improve as Shaam Chakravarty took a wicket with his first ball, a short & wide delivery was clattered to point by Wildman where Captain Brockton flung himself to his right to claim a fine diving catch. Chris Page went at 10s but took a wicket, caught by Hamilton right on the line at long-on & when Isaac Cottrell was bowled offering no shot on the stroke of lunch SoA were in all sorts of trouble at 104-9 from 30 overs. This included a fantastic catch by the old curmudgeon Page who caught Bates at short mid wicket off a firm drive. “Not bad for 72 eh lads”. Umpire Stevenson observed that three bowlers had taken a wicket with their first ball in that session, something he had never seen, or heard of before ! After a fabulous lunch, which perhaps lingered on a little too long (plenty of vino tinto & vino blanco on offer) Pykett & the amusingly names Snookes added 54 for the final wicket before the popular Tiddington man was stumped by the impressive Ed Wilson to give Butcher (3-28) his 3rd wicket. The pick of the Nomads bowlers, on an admittedly helpful surface. Nomads opted to open with Minor Counties teenage cricketer Kahil Jairwala & the returning burly figure of Vic Kandampully. Alas, both were back in the hutch relatively early & Wilson suffered the ignominy of being run out without facing a ball when he was sent back by his partner. Nomads 28-3. However Nirav Jariwala and the talented “Gus” Puri (Stanmore CC) forged an important partnership. The SoA bowlers began to tire in the searing summer sunshine and when Jariwala was dismissed for an excellent 29, James Hamilton joined Puri to see Nomads over the line to a 6 wicket win. Puri 54* & Hamilton 22*featuring 5 boundaries. Interested spectators included Michael Blumberg, “Lurkers” and "Wakers" from SoA, Don Brooks, Robin Pykett, CJ Smith (in some very tight cycling lycra) & Nick Pykett’s infant son Othello who seemed to enjoy proceedings. We thank Tiddinton CC for their hospitality, as always and look forward to the fixture In September back at their pretty ground in the Oxfordshire countryside.
