Nomads lose too many wickets in chase

The Nomads travelled to Oxfordshire to play our old friends South Oxfordshire Amateurs, at the pretty setting of Tiddington Cricket Club.  With forecasts set to top 30 degrees in the area, this was to be a hot contest on and off the field.
Nomads won the toss and on a decent looking track opted to insert the home side.  The decision looked to be a positive one as Nomads somewhat makeshift opening attack of Balkwill & Ralphs operated with a good degree of skill. Ralphs bowled an excellent first spell before the lunch period (12-4-22-2) accounting for opener Race and Cumnor 1st XI cricketer Bull. At lunch SoA were placed on 121-3, Owen Marshall taking the other wicket, Aziz 60 not out from the 36 overs bowled.
After a fantastic lunch (and thank you Lesley Pykett for a tremendous spread) Aziz accelerated to reach his hundred from 143 balls, and then promptly slapped Owen Marshall for 6. However, Nomads were to have the last laugh when he picked out the bucket hands of Kandampully at deep mid-wicket for 110 from 150 balls faced.

Ash Arora was wheeling away from the other end, fully deserving his 3 wickets with fellow Kent compatriot Andy Rouse impressing behind the sticks with a catch and a stumping (a somewhat inebriated Nick Pykett).  SoA batting 56 overs for 240-8, Nomads would receive in the region of 45 overs back.
Brockton & Kandampully were tasked with negotiating the 50 mins before the tea break and the pair pushed the score to 53 when Kandampully, who had larruped a couple of firm drives was caught behind chasing a rather wide delivery.  Brockton, who had looked in decent touch soon followed, his furniture being uprooted by a Max Smith yorker, one of his 3 wickets on the day.
After lunch Chingford overseas Balkwill and former Worcestershire cricketer Richards rebuilt, Balkwill taking an extraordinary liking to offie Davies, who was slapped for 22 from his first over.  However, Richards and Balkwill both fell when looking well set, a familiar fate fell of debutant Robert Vance, a Kiwi chum of Ross Ormison who had represented his country in both Test and ODI cricket in the 1990s.
The pair looked to get the Nomads back on track, but “get 20 odd and get out” seemed to be a familiar tale of the Nomads innings with no one scoring a total of substance.  Owen Marshall typified this with a pugnacious 28 from just 11 balls before his off stump was trimmed by Cross.
Nomads were now up against it, Ralphs looked to counter-attack but was caught at short cover (and given a send-off for his troubles) and it was left to experienced campaigners Andy Rouse & Chris Page to see out the final few overs to secure the draw. Nomads finishing precariously on 189-9 from 46 overs.
As is usually accustomed Nomads repaired to the Tiddington bar to sample some of the local Oxfordshire ales, glad to be out of the scorching heat of the day.  We thank Nick Pykett & his SoA team for a fabulous afternoon’s cricket played largely in good spirits, with a competitive edge.
Interested spectators included Robin Pykett, Don Brooks (father of Somerset & Yorkshire seamer Jack), Michael Blumberg, Mark Williams and SoA stalwart “Lurkers” who was planning a cricket come back in what would be his 80th year !
