Tom Brockton hits maiden ton for Nomads on debut
On a rather miserable day, cold and drizzle, Nomads batted first and posted some 314 runs against some friendly bowling hampered by an increasingly wet ball.Tom Brockton hit a solid maiden century for Nomads on debut. Charles Peerless and Simon Barter hit fifties so several new comers to the Woodbridge Oval gained valuable time at the crease. Skipper for the day James While set very attacking fields and soon Sporting Alfas had lost three early wickets to the slow spin of Hussey and seam of Neebar. The innings revived with a big stand from Dawes and Marinner and later of Mac Macinstry.Spencer Dawes who normally hits robust cameos played a substantial innings. The late introduction of Brockton and then While himself produced a flurry of wickets leaving Sporting Alfas all out off the last ball. Such were the conditions that it said a lot for the players' enthusiasm that a game was played at all. The umpire who stood for 80 overs was mighty pleased to received a large brandy on reaching the bar!

A Tale of Two Tons
Tom Brockton won the toss and elected to bat. Shortly afterwards his openers were back in the hutch both out to skipper Steve Cowley who after receiving punishment in his fourth over removed himself from the attack. Reeves and Peerless repaired the innings with a stand of 68 runs at a slow pace as veteran Paul Taylor bowled a tidy spell despite the ball being found to be but 4 and 3/4 oz! Taylor eventually removed Reeves for 30 and then Barter(ever his rabbit) soon after.Dawes then disposed of Gavin cheaply leaving Nomads at 99-5 well past half way and in trouble!.
Skipper Brockton and Peerless added 32 before Dawes struck again bringing in Latchman who was soon run out,156-7. Peerless batting with increasing confidence was now joined by Jeffers and these two punished the remaining overs so that Nomads reached a respectable 227-7 off 40 overs,a total which seemed unlikle for much of the innings. Spencer Dawes and Christian Muñoz put on a useful opening stand of 73 runs but thereafter wickets fell steadily as Nomads contrived to keep Munos off strike. At 176-9 Nomads looked likely to bowl the opposition out but a last wicket stand of 30 resulted as Muñoz reached his well crafted century and Cowley defended stubbornly. The scorers suddenly corrected the number of overs bowled leaving Muñoz on strike and some 30 runs to win! Somehow Brockers had bowled the penultimate over by mistake. It spoilt his analysis but a fifer is still a fifer.
Nomads had won by 21 runs! Not a draw Steve! MATCH 9 NOMADS CC v Forty Club of Spain Monday March 14th 2011, 12.30pm, Woodbridge Oval Albir L'Alfas Del Pi Spain-Time game

Two tons see Nomads home
A generous declaration by Geoff Evans after Mark Spencer's savage onslaught on our bowling gave Nomads a fair chance of chasing the total required. Nomads were without Ranjit who had deflected the ball while dropping a slip catch onto his lip but then Forty Club were minus Mark Spencer for some time while Ranjit was being patched up. Simon Barter's captaincy included his usual eccentricities yet he took three very good catches. His choice of opening batsmen proved sadly to be disastrous but perhaps was punishment for Jeffers' hang over! Neebar achieved the near unique distinction of being caught by Jeff Bellis.
Hussey and Brockton put together a well paced stand of nearly two hundred runs ultimately leading to Nomads win with 5 balls to spare.
