Jason’s fine ton in vain as Nomads bowlers prove inadequate.
Nomads returned to Cranleigh School after an absence of 21 years. No longer the all day time game with lunch and tea as of old but a 40/40 match with lunch in between, over restrictions but no fielding restrictions.
Jason Billimoria won the toss and elected to bat . Old Cranleighans began with very attacking fields and Narzm and Sanjay briefly flourished. Narzm hit a six and two fours but was bowled in the second over while Sanjay hit five 4s before being caught out in the 6th over. Matthew Balch holed out deep square leg at which point Nomads were 71-3 in the ninth over. Skipper Jason now joined debutant Veehan Kelkar and these two put on 104 in 17 overs before Veehan hit one down deep mid wicket’s throat. However the introduction of spinners and defensive fields had slowed down the momentum of Nomads innings somewhat. Hamza and Joe Purnell made cameos and Jason reached a fine century but the final Nomads total of 280 looked some 30/40 runs short especially given the paucity of Nomads bowling resources and the lightning outfield.
Drop outs from the original selection had deprived us of two main bowlers Alfie Gardner and Joe Ridley. Furthermore Hamza was selected as an allrounder but informed us that he had bowled little this season as was concentrating on batting. Hamza opened the bowling and his first over was struck for 21 runs. Joe Ireland at the other end went for 1 and indeed the two Joe’s combined to stump Kent at which point OCs were 1-63 in the sixth over. Hamza went for 48 off three overs and his replacement young Vihaan beat the bat several times but went for 35 off six. Nomads bowlers were not helped by some slipshod out fielding resulting in boundaries and by the presence of a few statues. It was that bowling enigma Arvind Joshi who took the next wicket Pritchard and later on Luca La Costa for 137. Max Latchmore took the other wicket to fall, Tom Selby for 42.
Old Cranleighans reached their target after 29.5 overs. This was a heavy defeat but given our bowling resources a commendable effort with two fine innings from Vihaan and Jason.
Most of the Nomads then repaired to the Red Lion pub on Shamley Green for several beverages and a good deal of cricket chatter, a very attractive spot on a fine summer’s evening to lick our wounds.
