A sweltering Draw
Despite the heat and the red alert Hampshire Hogs and Nomads played a full match of 113 overs with the result a draw. Two undefeated centuries were recorded. For Hogs Connor Gibson struck 103 off 82 balls and for Nomads Matthew Balch smote 103 off 128 balls.
Nomads skipper James Hamilton won the toss and put Hogs in so they batted for 58 overs setting Nomads 302 to win off 55 overs. This decision surprised some but James calculated that with much depth in batting Nomads were more likely to chase successfully than bowl out Hogs.
James and Andy Penn opened the bowling and both bowled tidy spells and Hogs reached 22 after 10 overs. By lunch Hogs had lost three wickets for 143 off 35 overs, two to Louis Baker-Stewart’s off spin and one to a very good caught and bowled by Felix Nielsen.
Lunch stimulated Hogs batters Gibson and Andrew Halstead who added another 66 runs in 11 overs whereupon James removed Halstead via a catch by Singh. This brought in Rishi Thareendra who smashed 42 off 26 balls adding 68 with Gibson off 7.2 overs. Connor Gibson completed a fine century off 82 balls and Hogs declared on 301-6 off 58 overs. Since lunch Hhogs had scored 158 off 23 overs.
Nomads fancied their chances of chasing down 302 and the innings started at pace with some 65 runs coming off the first 10 overs. Unfortunately a series of rash shots, three aerial which were well caught and one bowled left Nomads 82-4 off 18.4 overs. James was caught in two minds and flicked a soft catch to Rishi at mid wicket,108-5 off 26.3 overs. Nirav Jariwala now joined Matthew Balch and these two added a further 147 runs, a splendid effort marked by lots of rapid running between the wickets but well short of the target.
Hogs fielding had been very sharp with many a boundary shot cut off yet by comparison behind the stumps was not so good, 45 extras in total including 28 byes and 12 wides.
This was a very enjoyable days cricket and Nomads lingered on a fine evening debating the day’s play and more over several beverages. Arvind Joshi consuming endless Coca Colas. We were pleased to meet umpire Graham Fink again who has officiated at this match in previous years and met us in Menorca April 2025.
