Match 18 NOMADS CC v Oxford University Authentics CC at University College Ground Abingdon Road Oxford Friday May 15th 1.00pm – Time Game,20 overs from 6.00pm
Tics catchers win the match
This was another chill day with sporadic patches of sunshine and the odd light shower enhanced by the attractive University College ground. Authentics skipper Will Marriage won the toss and elected to bat. Nomads bowled well and Authentics were soon in a perilous position being 8-127. Had all the chances been taken and Jack Ellis not suffered a spate of no balls one of which was a wicket taker the Authentics would have been in dire trouble. Most frustratingly the 9th wicket partnership produced 49 runs whereupon the innings was declared at 176 off 56 overs. The eleventh man had yet to show up! James Hamilton took four wickets
After a substantial Tea Nomads replied and Vic was quickly off the mark striking boundaries but at the other end Nomads lost Stu and Rob early shortly followed by Vic. Nomads batters showed aggressive intent yet wickets fell steadily,6-118.
Jack Ellis and Alfie Gardner now put on 36 and seemed to be coating towards victory when both were caught out leaving 162-8. A confident looking James Hamilton fell at 172 still some 5 runs short of victory. Ben and Duncan blocked a few balls and took one run. 4 to win with ten balls to go. Ben chose a slog sweep to mid wicket only for the fielder Patel to dash in and take the winning catch. Nine Nomads batsmen had been caught out. Jack Ellis top scored with an excellent 48.
An exciting match but one which Nomads should have won. Most significantly Nomads conceded 21 extras to Authentics 6 and there were those unnecessary 7 no balls!
Nomads and some Authentics repaired to the Duke of Monmouth pub for ale and food, the ‘Tics celebrated victory in the front garden while the Nomads in good humour wondered what might have been at the rear disturbed by a game of Aunty Sally.
