Serious Nomads misjudgement

On Nomads arrival  Marden's skipper for the day apologised. The Days were holding a family birthday party and most of the club were there celebrating. Marden was as a result not as strong as usual. Nomads batted first. Fermont, Robin Symondson and Charlie Penn scored runs. David Fermont as accomplished as usual failed to accelerate, indeed his 64 contributed to a total of 172. Ten more minutes of Charlie Penn would have been useful but in the event with a strong nudge from Marden's skipper  Nomads declared at 189-4 off 43.5 overs leaving the opposition 40 plus overs.

Nomads' attack was depleted by the apparent indisposition of Charles Penn nevertheless in view of Marden's apparent weakness Nomads felt confident of bowling out Marden. However Nomads were guilty of a failure of observation, let alone research, as despite the Days' party Marden opened with the 1st XI opening pair. These two dealt rather easily with Nomads bowling,a mix of seam and spin. Maxted completed a fine century before falling to occasional bowler Nick Hilton and Marden reached their target at 7.25pm with 8 overs to go. A nine wicket victory for Marden.

Despite the ignominious defeat Nomads eat and drank well  before returning late to London. Marden CC was renown in those days for its food with the large steaks provided by the local farmer members of Marden or so it is alleged.

Nomads played Marden from 1975 to 1986 at their original ground. Marden now has a magnificent cricket ground and hockey pitch located on the edge of the village. The photo above is of the new ground. Should anyone has a picture of the old pavilion and ground please let us have a copy.
