July 12th-16th 90th Anniversary Cricket Week

To celebrate the ninetieth year of Nomads CC a four match cricket week was arranged to be played at the Roehampton Cricket club on Putney Heath with a grand supper on Wednesday evening. Daryn Williams of Roehampton CC and subsequently of Nomads orchestrated the arrangements at Roehampton. Patrick Cobb put military experience to good use so an ancient marquee was erected. Monday's match was scheduled to be against Portugal on tour. Nick Hammill, a Nomads member, had been skipper of Portugal and help set up the Federation of Portuguese cricket. However the tour was cancelled and so we played  a scratch side named Bedouins and the start time was changed from 11.30am to 2.00pm. Chris Wakefield of Oxford Downs but playing for Nomads that day arrived early and met a lady of some quality who lived by the ground. This enterprising social inter-action befuddled Chis's brain as the Oxfordshire run machine was out cheaply. Excellent man management enabled us to deal with the dog walking obtructionist who sought to disrupt each game by exercising his right under Common Law to walk across Common Land as he wished.
Between Saturday July 10th and Monday July 19th we played eight matches in 10 days suggestive of some rude health in the Nomads CC.

Dramatic Finish as Match Tied

Nomads won the toss and despite the early loss of Wakefield made good progress with fifties from Richard Kershaw and Nigel Taylorson. Then with the introduction of B Adams who had played several times for Nomads early in the season without taking a wicket tore the innings apart with a 4 wicket haul. With Horsham chipping in with two late wickets the Nomads innings had imploded to 181 all out in just 29.5 overs.

After a decent Tea largely ignored by 'The Pope', Bedouins opened their batting with Jack Hyams and Richard Campion and these two made slow progress against Gregory and Blumberg. Gregory eventually made the breakthrough in over 21 removing Hyams. After 24 overs Blumberg was replaced by Hambleton and the skipper took two wickets. Hambleton took three yet Bedouins looked set to win when Pyrah was run out and with a couple of boundaries from Townsend the scores were level then the tireless Gregory had C Adams caught by Daryn Williams off a mighty drive.A catch to remember!. Gregory was to bowl throughout and finished with 4-79. Wow!

A lot of ale was subsequently consumed at the Roehampton clubhouse.

 Smillie Six brings victory

The President was confident of victory as the ninth wicket fell with Nomads still needing nine runs to win. Tony Smillie had been a regular number 11 with no record of batting prowess yet on this occassion he excelled and with Andy Gregory added eight runs to level the score. Then he smashed a six off Paul Maloney to win the match.

Tony Smillie and Daryn Williams removed the openers Whiteway and Miller cheaply but Nigel Taylorson set about the bowling with his characteristic stroke playand had taken the innings to 132 when he became one of Patrick Cobb's four wickets and the innings wobbled. Peter Quinn, with a suntan to match the Hon Sec's, persisted yet the formidable late order of Kershaw,Ghersie and Mann fell cheaply to the returning Gregory and Smillie. The President's innings concluded on 200 off 57 overs.

Nomads lost two early wickets,John Dunley and the elevated Chris Leydon but Chris Heron and Richard Campion added 90 runs before he fell on 56 to Russell Mann. Campion followed bamboozled by a Ian Crombie lob.Evans,Hambleton and Cobb attacked Crobie lobs and Paul Maloney's off spin but Maloney had his revenge taking 4 wickets.Cobb fell at 183 whereupon Maloney removed Townsend and Ghersie clean bowled Daryn Williams.Nine to win, one wicket to fall. In strode Tony Smillie to join Andrew Gregory 'The Pope' and these two proved equal to the task.

Despite the weather not being brilliant there was a good crowd of  Nomads, past and present, watching this match and many Nomad Ladies-Pam Pen and Babara Owen-Browne among them.

About fifty people packed into the the Roehampton Clubhouse enjoyed a dinner cooked by Michael Willis and Michael Blumberg. There were toasts and short speeches for it was a very convivial occassion.

This was not as grand a celebatory week as The Golden Jubilee at Hurlingham in 1953 but hopefully Sidney Caulfield from a celestial vantage point will have been pleased. Unlike the 1953 event no Nomad member was married during the week.

Ramesh Sethi century sets up win for Nomads

The celebratory week was concluded with a match against our hosts Roehampton CC. Nomads won the toss and batted first.Ramesh Sethi who had played with John Nagenda in the East Africa team that competed in the 1975 first Cricket World Cup batted almost throughout out stumped 115, a beautiful innings!. Campion, Hambleton and Cobb formed useful partnerships as the innings past 200 to finish on 212 off the allocated 40 overs.

Roehampton looked well set to win the match but wickets for Ledger, Blumberg, Gregory and Maloney halted the momentum and the innings ran out of steam seven runs short of victory giving Nomads a win to finish the week. Andrew Gregory had a good week taking 9 wickets.Who would have thought 27 years later he would still be galloping in bowling seam! Divine inspiration or just a Banana for tea.

Despite the threatening weather we had completed three matches and our innings of the abandoned one, all skippered by our New Zealand captain Steve  Hambleton who insured the games were played in the best spirit.
