Swift Huzefa ton sets up Nomads victory

In the middle of a late summer heatwave, Oxted and Limpsfield’s home ground, Master Park, was shown to its best advantage. The pitch was even-paced and good for batting and the outfield was close-cropped and running fast. Both captains were therefore extremely keen to bat; and unfortunately Vic called ‘tails’ only to find himself staring at Elizabeth II. “Useless tosser” remarked several unhappy Nomads.

Having just circumnavigated the M25, Sajjad Shawl and James Hamilton now had to set to work on another ‘road’! Oxted made a fast start, with Adam Ranson putting up 15 before even allowing Mike Adamson to face a ball! Sajjad and Jimmy reined in the scoring rate without being able to make a breakthrough. Sajjad managed to elicit a flying edge though Brockers at first slip but in truth it was a very sharp chance. The probing left-arm spin of Nikhil Kadyan and the inswing of Hamza Sajawal continued to hold the scoring rate to 4 an over without managing to take a wicket, and Oxted brought up their 100 in the 24th over.

Ash Arora was introduced and immediately posed a threat by finding good turn, before eliciting a skier to mid-off from Adamson (44). The opening pair had put on 122 in 30.2 overs.

In Ash’s next over, Will Heaver’s lofted cover drive only found Kandampully’s soaring, tumbling dive to pluck the ball from mid-air. The Oxted 1st XI player’s disbelief and disappointment could be heard all over Master Park. The Arora/Kandampully double-act was shortly in action again. Ranson ignored the advice to ‘never run on a misfield’ following Arora’s half-stop off his own bowling; Vic pounced on the loose ball and whistled a one-bounce throw to Rouse who completed the tightest of run-outs.

With one end open, Hamilton was recalled, justifying his captain’s faith with a hostile second spell up the hill to break open the Oxted middle order, trapping Auer with a nipbacker before rearranging Kearns’ furniture with one that moved away.

Adam Ranson completed a fine century and carried on the good work, putting on 50 aided by Emmins, who took on the returning Shawl to good effect before being unluckily bowled by Arora off an underedge to take the score to 208/6.

With the tail in, Nomads chose to give singles to Ranson and bowl at the tail. This had the intended effect as Arora and Kadyan (1/67) cleaned up the tail, assisted by a direct hit run-out from Andy Peters at short third man.

Oxted & Limpsfield therefore reached 240 all out in 52 overs, largely thanks to an impressive 144* from Adam Ranson. Nomads had acquitted themselves well in 32 degree heat; thanks largely to Ash Arora’s unchanged spell of 5/40 from 13.2 overs, and to 2/52 from James Hamilton.

After a typically tasty Master Park tea, skipper Kandampully started the Nomads innings with a bang, dispatching some loose deliveries from Pearce to the fence with great force. At the other end, the usually dangerous spin of Heaver was uncharacteristically off-target and he quickly had to be removed from the attack. Having struck 8 boundaries in the first 5 overs, Vic misjudged the inswing of Mike Adamson and was bowled off his inside edge for 37.

However, this only brought Huzefa Sajawal to the crease to join club captain Brockton. Fresh from a century against Oxted last year, Zef was soon into his stride, and the pair added 61 for the second wicket before Brockton was unluckily stumped via a deflection from the wicketkeepers pads for 30.

From a fielding captain’s point of view, it has to be said that there are more welcome sights than Sanjay Beri striding to the crease at 106/2 to join Huzefa Sajawal in taking on your threadbare bowling line-up. Sanjay got the scoreboard moving, and the spectators on the top boundary soon found themselves assailed by a blizzard of sixes. Zef took a heavy toll on Emmins, while Sanjay was especially savage on Rose. The hundred partnership was reached in only 12 overs before Sanjay succumbed to Adamson (2/52) for 37.

Huzefa reached his second consecutive century against Oxted & Limpsfield with a four off Traynor, and generously retired from the fray. Despite the loss of Kadyan, bowled by the returning Pearce, Andy Peters (23*) ensured Nomads surpassed the total with some 15 overs to spare.

On such a gorgeous day it was predictable that Nomads spectators would be out in force. Dr. Vijay Kandampully was not batting at three (perhaps contrary to the expectations of Chris Page), but contented himself with a watching brief, fortified by several bottles of ale. Ben Butcher & Lauren Carroll turned up for a lap of the pitch and a spot of sunbathing, while Duncan Ellis brought young Jack ‘The Badger’ for extensive nets and fielding practice, in accordance with the Nomads’ youth policy.

Those assembled had watched Nomads chase 240 in just over 35 overs for the loss of 4 wickets, and several celebratory jugs of beer were produced in short order as Nomads and Oxted players enjoyed the cooling effect of Oranjeboom and lemon drizzle cake in the cool dappled shade in front of the pavilion. Oxted captain Phil Traynor was, as ever, a generous host, and kept our glasses filled until some while after sunset.
