Blackheath win off last ball

A fantastic game at Blackheath saw all results possible in the last over of the day – with three required to win from the last ball of the game.  Nomads had arrived at the Rectory Field to find a warm welcome, with Pimms being proffered from an enormous 10 pint jug filled with fruit and ice. The Bank Holiday was ‘Ladies Day’ at Blackheath, and several Nomads & Blackheath players had invited their wives, girlfriends and mothers to watch the game and to take advantage of the free Prosecco liberally distributed by organiser Vic Kandampully. In bright sunshine, Nomads won the toss and chose to bat against a Blackheath bowling line-up littered with the familiar faces of several occasional Nomads. A solid opening stand of 45 got us off to a good start before Chetan Malhotra (10) was brilliantly held at gully by Mills off Ahmed. Thierry Pascal unfortunately succumbed to a full toss from the spinner, Samuels, immediately thereafter. A promising partnership between Richard Fleming (45) and Surrey star Harry Gardner (17) was unfortunately cut short by a double-strike. Occasional Nomad Div Mishra safely pouched Fleming at mid-wicket (and treated him to a Sheldon Cottrell style salute!) before nicking off Gardner. Ben Ralphs (20) sought to rebuild the innings in the face of some lively Blackheath chirping, but when he was eventually bowled by Mishra – the second, Nomads had fallen to 115/6. However, this brought James Hamilton (56*) and Sajjad Shawl (40) to the crease, and they gradually set about changing the narrative, before unfurling some big shots to keep up the tempo. Hamilton prospered against the returning Ahmed, while Sajjad took three of Mo Pacha’s deliveries for 6,4,6, and smashed Shanks for key boundaries. The partnership of 104, plus some late hitting from skipper Andy Marshall (22*), took Nomads to 247/7 dec. from 53 overs – a respectable total on a good wicket and fast outfield.  In the field, Sajjad was as miserly as ever, but Hamilton was uncharacteristically wayward and, as Blackheath raced away to 42/0 after 8, was soon replaced by Ben Butcher.  The Blackheath openers were in no mood for compromise though, and the sight of Blackheath 4th XI skipper Pete Deal (31) lofting Butch over his head for 6 will live long in the memory. Happily, Sajjad made the breakthough – having Deal caught behind by Duncan Ellis, and followed up by rearranging Sadique’s furniture. This brought Blackheath 2s bat Amaan Ramzan to the crease to join Rouse, and the pair dealt well with long spells from Shawl (2-66 from 16) and Butcher (3-70 from 18) until Dan Rouse (57) holed out to Ben Ralphs off Butcher. Butch then trapped Cornforth LBW and Blackheath were 130/4 at the start of the 20, needing 118 to win, with Ramzan 25*. At the other end, there was chaos in the Blackheath ranks – Ahmed run out by the length of the pitch without facing a ball, and Mishra holing out at mid-on. Shanks (16) joined Ramzan, and the match tightened up as Ramzan milked Andy Marshall and took the attack to the Nomads spinners, passing fifty, and hitting regular sixes to ensure Blackheath stayed up with the rate. A single over from Ralphs was ineffective, and Marshall recalled the seamers. Hamilton finally drew a false stroke from Ramzan, but Nomads’ joy was short-lived as Malhotra could not hang on to the skier at point. Blackheath looked firm favourites when it was 9 to win off 12 balls, but James Hamilton (2/43) confounded the confident predictions of onlookers by having Shanks caught by Butcher, and immediately removing Samuels LBW for a golden duck in a double-wicket maiden. Sajjad had the last over, and Ramzan completed his century with a hard-run two, before being stranded at the non-strikers end the next ball when the batsmen decided that only a single could be achieved. Mills immediately took a suicide single to Andy Marshall at mid-wicket – Andy’s gentle underarm missed the stumps by a fraction, with Ramzan halfway down. Back on strike, Ramzan couldn’t get the penultimate ball away, leaving three required from the final ball to win. In the event, Ramzan launched the final ball over wide-mid-on for six to win a fantastic and hard-fought game of cricket – a wonderful advert for declaration cricket and a great show for Ladies Day. Ramzan fully deserved his wonderful century – 107* in total. Nomads repaired to the Blackheath bar for pizzas and beer, where umpire Nick Stevenson regaled the ladies with various anecdotes and his characteristic booming laugh. Meanwhile, the President attempted to recruit the match manager’s girlfriend for the autumn tours to Rome and Alfas del Pi! The Nomads XI also came second in the game of ‘Cornhole’, but were certainly never outmatched in the matter of buying and consuming beer.
