Chingford hang on to draw after Akhtar blast
All four results were still very possible with as few as four overs to go, hospitality was excellent as usual and there was not a drop of rain and plenty of sunshine. So this must go down as an excellent advert for declaration cricket, arguably much needed in these T20/Hundred times. And thanks are due to our hosts, officials and spectators for a fine day.
Nomads travelled in fine spirits to Kimberley Way after a good win over Kensington CC the previous day. A trio of separate transport troubles might have required skipper Kandampully to ask his mum to join the Mighty Blum and the groundsman’s dog in the slip cordon had Chingford been batting first. But this was avoided with Nomads winning the toss and taking first use of a deck on it’s sixth day. Our effort of 225/5 declared was anchored by the captain’s unbeaten ton. The Club Captain, Brockton, showcased his (and Vic’s) speed between the wickets pinching singles with ease just about everywhere (and with particular glee to Mike Blake) in making a handy 38. Rosco showed, as he the day before, that class is permanent with a nice 33*. The tail, which was a lot longer than that on the aforementioned canine, was fortunately not required. That total of 225, made in 45 overs, looked competitive on a turning and low track.
After tea, Chingford faced the prospect of an interesting chase against a six strong Nomads attack, led by Marshall (T) fresh from a 5-fer the day before at Hampshire Hogs for Frogs. He sure was fluid, particularly pacey and achieved excellent carry on an otherwise lifeless track. However, a typically brutal innings of 78 from Chingford’s opener,Jam Akhtar, who clearly liked pace on the ball, got the home side off to a flyer. James Hamilton, showing wisdom beyond his years and finishing with a creditable 1-17, made sure he was bowling much more at the other, relatively becalmed, opener. By the time the opening assassin was second out, the score was 106, made in good enough time to be a platform for a home victory. However, wickets then fell more regularly, with a tight spell from Marshall (A) and ace Ash Arora turning it viciously. The slows led the wicket taking; the former ended with 2-60 and the latter with 3-32 to supplement two run outs. The Professor, to the shock of many – including himself – finished wicketless. But, despite that, he didn’t disappoint in providing two highlights; great compassion for Ollie’s bad back which limited the youngster’s chasing speed to a casual jog, and a dramatic, full length dive at short cover saving 4 that he would have been proud of in goal at Wembley “45 year ago”.
Despite the difficulty of playing the slow bowlers, the home side were in touching distance on 190 with those four overs to go when the eighth wicket fell. The Professor didn’t quite have the penetration needed to finish off the home side who, showing their usual quality, had a tail limited to the unseen Blakey – Mike not Dick – at 11, and were able to block those last overs to finish on 199/8.
The bar did good business and Vic’s celebratory jugs tasted mighty fine
