Nomads in Spain March 2013 L’Afas Del Pi

Nomads win comfortably
The tour opener vs the Sporting Alfas mid-week XI is usually a good opportunity to get valuable practice in before the ‘big game’ on Saturday. Tom Brockton won the toss and elected to bat. Nomads racked up 290 against some generally friendly bowling. Kie Farrell top scored with a fluent 71 and Tom Brockton as well as Ranjit Latchman weighed in with half centuries as Nomads rocketed along at over 7 an over for the entirety of their innings.
Against such an imposing score the mid-week XI were never in the hunt despite some resistance from Neil McKinstry and the amusingly named Pat Goodhand, who was spectacularly caught at 1st slip by the evergreen Latchman. Michael Blumberg took a cracking snaffle at 1st slip to dismiss the skipper Geoff Evans off the bowling of John Hardy as the mid-week XI fell some 121 runs short, closing on 169-8 after their allotted 40 overs.

Nomads batting has a poor day after bright start
T
he Saturday showpiece fixture vs the 1st XI of Sporting Alfas did not start well with Nomads President Michael Blumberg seriously injured by an Ed Barry beamer in the nets (some 7 Nomads were found to be fresh, not suffering from the ill effects of a late night at the Yellow Submarine and hard at practice at 11:30am). Nomads won the toss and inserted the home side. They were quickly rewarded with the wickets of Spain Internationals Marc Spencer and Chris Muñoz, Stu Reeve and John Hardy the successful bowlers. Tom Brockton and Nigel Hussey also bowled tight spells, conceding some 30 runs from their 8 completed overs, but lacklustre displays from Jack Hardy and Ed Barry meant that Phil Pennick was able to free his substantial arms and biff his way to a century. Ben Fletcher also hit some lusty blows on his way to an even 50, and Nomads fielding became a little ragged in the final overs to enable Alfas to set Nomads 281 to win. With a powerful top order the general feeling was still positive and openers Farrell and Reeve put on an impressive opening stand in good time. Brockton and Latchman continued to score at a run-a-ball after the dismissal of the openers but the loss of the pair for 48 and 24 respectively triggered an astonishing collapse as Nomads fell from comparative ease to 173 all out. Marc Spencer was the pick of the bowlers from the home side with 3 scalps. Sporting Alfas winning by the comfortable margin of just over 100 runs.

Comfortable win despite very sad news
The Nomads party and many long standing Alfas members were shocked by the sad news of the passing of cricketing legend Charlton Lamb the previous Friday afternoon. Michael Blumberg was unable to take any further part in the tour from a playing perspective due to the injury he received in the nets the previous day, thanks Ed Barry! Nomads batted first and to good effect racking up some 300 runs from their 40 overs. With the exception of Jamie Roper, who had just been added to the Spain senior squad, the bowling was ragged and fielding lacklustre as Geoff Evans tried in vain to stem the flow of runs. Nigel Hussey found some timely form after registering ducks in both the first and second games and scored a fine hundred. He was well supported by a typically bullish innings from John Hardy who lambasted his way to 69 with some terrific hitting and Tom Brockton who milked a half century. In reply Alfas Sunday XI posted a respectable 209-7 but still fell just under 100 short of the total that always seemed beyond them. Hussey completed a fine day on a personal note with two wickets and Brockton knocked over both Evans and McKinstry who each scored 41. Jamie Roper chipped in with a quick-fire 40 before he offered a chance to Jack Hardy at deep mid-wicket.

Nomads unable to press home victory
In the final match of the March 2013 tour Nomads took on the 40 club of Spain who boasted a strong side with new recruits to the veterans' side . Nomads won the toss and Brockton opened with Kevin Smith who had now found his car after misplacing it somewhere in Altea the day before! Smith was caught behind by Ward off the bowling of Laundon for 17 but Brockton and Kie Farrell added a substantial partnership before Brockton was caught and bowled by Fletcher for 49. Unfortunately opening bowler Rico from LaManga had sustained a nasty injury to the webbing of his left hand fielding a fierce cover drive from Brockton. 4 stitches resulted after a trip to A&E and he would take no further place in the match. Brockton called in the troops with the score on 239-4 from 39 overs. Kie Farrell had registered his maiden Nomads century containing a plethora of boundaries, and Ranjit Latchman a typically classy 44 in a good allround batting display. A vastly improved bowling spell from Ed Barry got Nomads off to a flier as he took the first 3 wickets to fall including the scalp of David Williams. Barry was well supported by John Hardy with the new ball who also took 3 wickets. Reeve and Brockton kept things tight as did ex-Notts professional Paul Taylor but a limpet like innings from former deep sea diver Bobby Nix kept Nomads at bay. Laundon struck a few lusty blows as did Ben Fletcher but in the end they had to settle for very much second best in a drawn game. Nomads two wickets away from victory with the 40 club of Spain closing on 158-8. Kie Farrel had taken three athletic catches for Nomads, but his efforts were to ultimately be in vain. Young wine expert but novice cricketer Malik Ben-Sliman took what is probably his first ever catch in a cricket match. Well done, may many more follow.
