Kevin Laundon century takes Forty Club to convincing win

Nomads usually win this match or have very much the better of a draw. The connundrum for the Nomads' skipper being when to declare so as to have time to winkle out the Forty Club's obstinate tail. In the event Nomads made a sporting declaration perhaps 20 runs short of their target thus giving Forty Club more overs to chase. Rupert Style had accelerated well in the later part of his innings to top score.  Forty Club replied in very sluggish mode as Geoff Evans struggled with a damaged left arm. However once he had retired Kevin Laundon smote the ball to all parts of the ground and he was well supported by the 'Red Baron' Chris Cooper. These two won the match with several overs to spare. Doubtless if young Robbie Blackburn had brought with him proper cricket boots for a synthetic surface instead of Tennis shoes he would have knocked over these two stalwart veterans.

Nomads batting fails the task

Nomads arrived in good order on another sunny day to play at the Woodbridge Oval following for most players a very late night out.   Alfas won the toss and batted and were soon in some discomfort. A pacy spell from Robbie Blackburn had both openers playing and missing but it was the guile of vintage seamer Ollie Croom-Johnson that brought an early breakthrough for the visitors. First Pennick and then Alger were gone for 8. Had Nomads held on to a couple of difficult chances their ascendancy at this point in the game may have proved to be crucial. In the event Brook  and young Marshall added 71 runs. Bill Johnson decived Brook who was smartly stumped by Kevin Smith and then ran out Marshall. At 94-4 Nomads sensed a low Sporting Alfas total but Afzal and skipper Fletcher added 50 before Andy Smith bamboozled Fletcher with his flight and  bowled him. The innings now swung Alfas's way as Afzal and Mohammed added a quick 60 runs and despite Blackburn removing Afzal at 203 Mohammed continue to swing merrily bringing the innings to a decent 243 in total. Resuming after an excellent tea Nomads set off at good pace with Nigel Hussey punishing some short bowling. Unfortunately for Nomads his cameo was all too short and worse was to come as Nomads skipper Brockton fell for a rare duck giving youing Roper his second wicket. Ormiston and Johnson added 57 runs before Johnson having just played a withering boundary pull attempted the same shot next ball only to sky it into the covers. The experienced Ranjit Latchman was soon bowled by Pennick for a mere single. Nomads were thus 92-4, much the same score as Sporting Alfas at the similar stage of the innings. Andy Smith joined Ormiston adding 27 before he fell to Mohammed. Mohammed's bowling action is deplorable. The square leg umpire approached Sporting Alfas's skipper  who agreed he chucked but added that it was only a friendly game and he was a slow chucker. The square leg umpire then remarked that if this was a league game he would have  discussed the action with the bowling umpire and informed skipper and bowling umpire that he would 'no ball' him thereafter unless he changed his action. And so Mohammed continued to chuck and spin with great effect recording figures of 5-24 as Nomads innings folded despite Ross Ormiston striking Mohammed for a huge six. Nomads had lost again on Saturday by a large margin despite the game being evenly balanced for much of the time. Nevertheless both sides lingered long in the clubhouse afterwards drinking in great harmony with their most hospitable of hosts. Needless to say bowling actions did receive a lot of attention in friendly conversation

Despite two defeats Nomads enjoy some drinks on a fine evening at Sporting Alfas

Andrew Smith too ill to bat

Andrew Smith elected to play but after one ball at the crease retired unwell. He did recover sufficiently after Tea to bowl three overs. However given that we had surplus players available this seemed to be a bizarre personal decision. In the event Nomads bowling contained Sporting Alfas so we ran out winners by 24 runs.
