Nomads in debt to Jason Caunt's all-round performance

Nomads were victorious at Harrow School vs The Chelsea Arts Club, the margin being 56 runs. However, it was not all plain sailing for the visitors, who were indebted to former Nottinghamshire cricketer Jason Caunt's sterling all-round performance & 5 wickets from the mighty Sajjad Shawl.

With the bat Nomads had slumped to 69-6, Tom Brockton's fluent 35 being the only knock of note. Enter Caunt, who in partnership with Menorca CC's Royston Sturgeon added 102 runs in completely contrasting styles.  Caunt the aggressor, launching 4x 6's and Sturgeon knocking the ball smartly into the gaps to get Caunt back on strike.  Caunt was sadly run out for 92, just shy of what would have been his first Nomads hundred (he also scored 92 for Nomads on the Menorca tour back in 2018).  However, thanks to Caunt Nomads were able to declare on the comparative safely of 200-9.

On a huge ground, with a relatively slow, lush outfield this would be a tough run-chase for the home side, and it proved to be the case as Shawl & Caunt took the new cherry, quickly reducing the home side to 23-3 in 16 overs.

The only rest bite for the home side was the introduction of the curmudgeon Chris Page whose mood didnt improve when his first over went for 20, Peake dispatching 5 of his deliveries to the boundary.  However, he reigned it in and ended up wicketless, but going at 5 an over. Page was not complimentary of all those 'statues in the field'.

Shokoya and McConnell were re-building as the 20 overs commenced, but Pradip Lotlecar took a superb reaction catch at 3rd slip off Caunt, the ball ricocheting off keeping Faheem's shoulder and pouched by the usually statue like Lotlecar who celebrated with glee.

Enter the Arts Club's best player, Ed St Aubyn who was dropped down the order as punishment for his tardy time keeping (he arrived over an hour after the start of play). He immediately got into his stride, and with Captain of the day Malhotra worried about the Nomads lack of mobility in the field (only 2 players 40 or under in the XI) he recalled Sajjad Shawl & brought on former Durham cricketer Bill Johnson who was making a welcome return to the Nomads ranks.

Shawl struck removing the obdurate Shokoya who had battled gamefully for 29 & then Brockton took a tumbling catch at cow corner, making good ground to dismiss St Aubyn.  Nomads now had a sniff of victory but overs were running out.

McConnell (Jnr) was trapped palpably LBW by a now rampaging Shawl, and 2 balls into the penultimate over of the game Shawl fittingly wrapped up the innings by dismissing Matthew for 0.  Nomads victorious with just 10 deliveries remaining. Shawl's figures were exceptional, bowling 21.2 overs in the day, and fully deserving his 5 scalps.

Our thanks to the Chelsea Arts Club captain Jack Nott-Bower for hosting the Nomads at his former school and providing much fulsome fare for lunch and tea.

The Nomads repaired to the Castle pub by Harrow School for some post cricket refreshment. Bill Johnson serenaded a couple of local ladies with his guitar, much to Chris Page's distain. A fitting end to the day !
