Phew! Nomads lose by a whisker
In what turned out to be a very low scoring game the home side scraped home by one wicket as number Baker ten hit the fourth ball of Bill Wilkinson's 20th over for four to win the match. Was it a streaky mis-hit or a thundering stroke from the middle of the bat? No one seems to remember. If anyone does do let us know.
Nomads won the toss and batted first for theirs was a strong batting line up.Yet both Nomads openers had gone for 23 whereupon there was a small stand of 20 before Tony Whiteway departed bowled for 17. Blumberg and Willis then added 27 valuable runs before both fell at 70.Bill Wilkinson and Mike Ghersie added 20 including a six hit from Ghersie. Then they both perished at 90 and that was that! A devastating spell by R Smith produced 4 wickets for no runs off 10 balls. Tony Alt, James Leahy and Sowden all recorded ducks.Thankfully there had been 7 extras including 4 no balls. Blumberg had top scored with 24 including five 4s.!
Clearly there must be some spice in the pitch but Nomads were short of bowlers.Ghersie opened with Bill Wilkinson and took the first wicket Rogers at 26 whereupon three more wickets fell,27-4. Eaton found a partner in Bennett and added 15 runs before round arm swerve bowler James Leahy bowled Bennett. Wilkinson removed number 7 for just 1 so Princes Risborough were a mere 47-6 and Nomads were in with a chance. Eaton found J Durban a useful partner and the score crawled along to 62 when he was bowled by Wilkinson. Leahy soon removed Malone for a duck,65-8 and Nomads were sniffing victory.
But alas the score would creep along to 88, a stand of 23 before Leahy bowled Durban for 25, the top score of the day. Number eleven P Smith survived the next five balls so it was now Wilkinson against number 10 Baker. Three dot balls but then a boundary four. Phew! That was close. Both Wilkinson and Leahy recorded excellent figures, 4-40 and 4-27.
An early end to play, of course, allowed more time at the bar with much to muse over.
