Missing Player proves crucial in close defeat
Staten Island CC is the oldest cricket club in the USA founded in 1972 some 31 years before Nomads CC. They were on tour in UK in 1993 and so Nomads played them at Merchant Taylors School thanks to Harry Latchman. A late cry off left Nomads with ten but a decent ten if not all in the prime of youth or fleet of foot.
Staten Island won the toss and elected to bat.Olly Kelly, a rather swift and good seam bowler, threw a wobbly, bowling five wides and being despatched for another 19 runs in two overs (stress from a high pressure job in the City was the verbal response of the slips). Despite this flying start Staten's innings was pretty sedate and following a run out and wickets from Whiteway and Blumberg a modest total looked likely. However the skipper kept himself on and suffered serious carnage from Khan in particular which provoked serious verbal amusement from Harry Latchman on the boundary.”If only we had 11 players muttered the skipper”. As a result Staten finished on a respectable 221-6(5).
The tourist ladies had prepared a sumptuous tea, no doubt with input from Judy Knowles, which was much enjoyed. However the choice of the liquid Tea was Earl Grey which looked decidedly feeble. Some Nomads expressed distress at the insipid colour of the Tea but hopefully this did not cause any offence.
Nomads opened with the stroke making Charles Peerless and the stonewall blocker Richard Campion. Peerless was out caught for 27 whereupon Ken Clarke set about the bowling reaching 84 before being bowled. Nomads at 111-2 looked to be in a good position to win especially as there was a load of batting to come. Unfortunately Campion's blocking put Nomads behind the run rate and following a cameo from Olly Kelly who hit a huge six the late middle order collapsed attempting to up the rate as Wahid claimed a fifer. Nomads last man Allen hit a couple of sixes as the last pair strove to achieve the impossible. Blumberg was out off the last ball with an uncharacteristic slog and so Staten Island had won by 12 runs. Well maybe 15 as the scorebook is misleading. The batting and bowling add up to 209 but the score recorded was 206! It was that sort of day, sunny spells, with showers and some lousd thunder.
After the match both teams were entertained at the Knowles family home with much excellent food and drink and speeches were made by Clarence Modeste, President of Staten Island CC, and Michael Blumberg, Hon Sec Nomads CC. Nomads promised to cross the 'Pond' and play at Staten Islands but decades later have still failed to fulfil that promise. Poor Show!
