A Miserable Farewell to Paddington Rec We played Essendine CC from 1977 to 1981 at Paddington Recreation Ground which in those days had two cricket grounds one with a grass square where we played. Subsequently the facility was redeveloped eliminating the larger ground which is now a cinder running track,Tennis courts and more. The smaller ground was further landscaped and a synthetic pitch installed but unfortunately the local residents use it for walking their dogs making the outfield unpleasant. The current Leisure Centre was the old Sports Pavilion. We assumed Essendine was named after a neighbouring Road of the same name.
This was to be our last visit to Paddington and Nomads performed spectacularly poorly.Batting first Essendine lost three early wickets but then Botrrill played a good innings and with first Williams and then Rowan took the total to 178-4 before the declaration was made.
Nomads’ response was disastrous with only three batsmen reaching double figures. The final score was a mere 68, all of 110 short of Essendine. The next day Nomads were to lose by 9 wickets so a rotten weekend by any standards.
Subsequently we played Old Millhillians on this date. Matches,Scorecards & Reports 1981
