2021 Nomads won by 40 runs,No Heatwave at Marlow

Nomads made the welcome return to Higginson Park to play Marlow Park CC on Saturday. Marlow Park have stopped playing league cricket and now field only “friendly” XIs on Saturdays, and a selection of Sundays. As always, the ground was a pretty picture & Nomads arrived in good time, bar Professor Page who was late & punished by his mandatory purchase lf a jug of beer at the end of the contest.

The weather forecasters predicted a humid afternoon with temperatures expected to be mid 20’s (another John Ketley weatherman error as the players would discover later).

Nomads won the toss, and elected to bat first, boasting a very strong top 6.  Beri and Brockton took up the chalice vs a Marlow Park team with 8 South African cricketers, all in good voice in the opening salvo.  However, the Nomads pair got off to an absolute flier, Lombard & Pullin dispatched to all parts of the ground as the score realised 92 in the just the 10th over.  Beri went into overdrive, reaching 77 with a couple of trademark straight drives for 6, before he was palpably LBW to Hannan (probably the pick of the bowlers for the home side).

Pav Malik joined Brockton who was now past 50 & motoring towards his century, which was reached in the 27th over with a series of crisply timed cover drives.  Malik looked in good touch also, racing to 41 before he called himself through for something of a tight single and was run out by the Marlow Park  wicket keeper with a direct hit (Saurabh Wahi would be dismissed in exactly the same fashion later in the game).

Enter Sajjad Shawl, who used his own brand of swashbuckling cricket to smash 54 from 39 balls before he was castled by the returning Brent Lombard.  Shawl hit 3 massive 6’s and 4x boundary 4s in his innings.  With 6 fielders on the boundary Brockton was happy to push the single and ended unbeaten on 138 from 119 balls after the allotted 40 overs.   Nomads reaching a mammoth 331-4, with all Marlow Park bowlers being punished.

Marlow Park would need an eye-watering 8.2 an over from ball 1 to overhaul this total, and Shez Muza opened the batting with Brent Lombard.
Unfortunately after going for 68 from 6 overs and fielding like the proverbial drain, Muza’s day was not to get better as he was bowled neck and crop in the 2nd over my left armer Chris Bartlett, who would claim 4 wickets in his 8 over spell.

Nomads, all but guaranteed a win, were a little lacklustre in the field with 5 catches being shelled (Page x2, Bahl, Ormiston & Shawl). Andy Marshall took a bit of long-handle tap but did also claim a wicket with Wahi taking a smart catch behind the stumps.

With the weather starting to deteriorate, drizzle and then heavy rain set in after 19 overs….. the players leaving the field, and as it turned out not to return.  As little as 5 miles away it was completely dry.
Fortunately Sumant Bahl, with his Hertfordshire premier division umpire hat on calculated the DLS total & in agreement with Marlow Park Nomads were awarded the win (by 127 runs on DLS).

Many thanks to Mike Barlow, scorer in chief for looking after both sides & the charismatic Cass for her speedy bar work when a good number of jugs were purchased at the conclusion of the match.
