Finchley block out the draw with help from the weather
Vamsi promised a stronger Finchley team than last year and on what skier described as a tricky pitch Nomads batsmen struggled to the extent that at one point the innings foundered at 6-128 then soon 9-168. It took an unbeaten tenth wicket stand between Yasin and Arvind of 47 to bring Nomads to a respectable total of 215-9 off 48 overs whereupon Vic declared. In addition to Yasin’;’s 32 not out Vic(34) and Lavya(30) were the only others who reached 30.
Finchley in reply made a decent start but then wickets fell steadily to Nomads spinners, Rana, Khpkhar and Butcher. Finchley’s opener Imran Haider top scored with 49 but there was little resistance from the rest apart from Finchley skipper Vamsi and Shoiabh Farooq towards the end. Well into the last twenty overs umpire Mark Williams brought play to a halt for bad light whereupon it rained for a short while and the covers were put on. With the return of blue sky and sunshine play resumed and Nomads took one more wicket Farooq for 17 but Vamsi and Mohammed Baz played out the last four overs with stout defence and so the match drawn.
Finchley are very generous hosts and wer met as usual with many a Bacon Butty, Coffeee and Tea while the President sipped Proscico with Mike Milton. The Finchley caterer was on holiday so a local Chinese Restaurant provided a very good lunch. Sadly the Labrador was off colour and unable to do the feast justice so Yasmin helped out.
Post match several Nomads plus Danny and Vamsi lingered over beers and then were invited to join a young lady’s party and enjoy another feast before leaving. This late night revelry had a debilitating effect on Vamsi who arrived at Orsett & Thurrock next day much the worse for wear.
Vic reached 872 runs for the season and Ben Butcher 49 wickets.
