Suffolk Tour June 26th-29th

Match 30 NOMADS CC v CAMBIDGE GRANTA CC at Pembroke College Granchester Road Cambridge 2.00pm
The scoresheet is missing though prepared by Peter Mathews. The Match was noteworthy for the fact that Nomads were two short and batted first. Steve Scowan went into Cambridge centre to search the pubs for cricketers. First pub, two cricketers both Australian, one who had played for Stoics and Nomads earlier in the season and another on holiday who then played every Nomads game he could, Steve Toulmin who had a sports shop in Australia. We were somewhat challenged for numbers on the tour and few in fact stayed on tour the 4 days.

Depleted Nomads batting found wanting
We won the year before by 10 wickets so perhaps they put out a stronger side. In the event Tony Clarke bowled well taking a fifer and the home side declared at 176-6 off 41 overs.
Widger ran through the Nomads top order and recorded figures of 6-27. Only our new Australian recruit Toulmin made double figures and he was last out for 38 out of a paltry 65 all out. We were minus two players, the Penn brothers would have made a difference.

Nomads batting fails the test
We were back to afull eleven for the match at the excellent location of Framlingham college. Nomads bowled well, in particular, Andy Penn bowled a long spell of 22 overs taking 6-67. To bowl out this strong side for 142 was an achievement.
In reply Nomads made a steady start reaching 69-1 whereupon Blumberg was bowled by Rutterford. Skipper David Fermont prevailed but despite a solid lower order no one could stay with him and 69-2 became 103 all out with three ducks and a couple of singletons. Rutterford finished with a fifer and Barker fourfer.Fermont was undefeated on 39.
It is worth noting in retrospect that despite a 2.15pm start and a finish at 7.30pm 99.1 overs were bowled and almost all of that seam.

One Penn not enough
We were short again on Monday despite some reinforcements so we recruited a couple of players from a local pub.One who could play a bit for the other it was a trifle dangerous.
Nomads won the toss and batted,Skipper for the day Blumberg fell cheaply. Andrew Hobbs from Cambridge Granta fell for 22 at 45 but then Alastair Symondson and Charles Penn added 80 and Mike Hodd partnered Penn for another 30. Then it was all Penn who finished on 108 whereupon the innings was declared at 224-7 off 46 overs.
Nomads bowlers reduced Pimpernel to 98-5 wth Charles Penn rampant with the ball having already scored a century. However Allen joined Stocker and these two battled it out to add 100 runs. A returning Penn removed Allen and then Stubbings but by now Pimpernel were just 9 runs short of winning and Stocker saw them home to victory.
